Poorly Bantam Part Deux The recovery (Gapeworm)

Recommended Posts

Please use this for Gapeworm reference.

Me and Ninja have come a long way since Monday 28th when the Grim Reaper was hovering over him, I joined Omlet forum and posted "Poorly Bantam" in desperation having found what I thought was a small under nourished very poorly hen on the grass verge of a main road, I listed symptoms with no experience of chooks whatsoever and the advice started rolling in within 5 minutes !

SYMPTOMS; continuous stretching of neck (which I now know is Gaping) sneezing (blocked up with mucus in nostrils), very smelly breath (serious throat infection), sagging neck (debilitation and pain in throat) Shaking head (trying to remove parasites and mucus in throat) Wheezing breaths (Throat blocked with mucus) and doing more sleeping than eating.

The diagnosis and advice regarding Gapeworm and infection was Bang On and an immediate trip to the vet availed me with 600mg of Flubenvet Poultry wormer powder, 3ml Baytril 10% Antibiotic with a syringe that measured down to 0.1 ml fluid and a quick injection of antibiotic to start the ball rolling.

The vet didn't mention that I had it wrong when referring to this "baby" male bird as a "she" but was Eastern European in origin and perhaps could not find a tactful way of telling me I had a small male chicken

.

DOSAGE; the Baytril is a twice daily syringe dosage of 0.2ml (Normally 0.1 in less severe circumstances) the Flubenvet is 30 ppm so 6g of powder in 2kg of feed (Yeah I know, difficult calculation if you don't know what he will be eating) both applied over a 7 day period. After much deliberation I landed on wiping a two inch piece of wholemeal bread in olive oil then dusting a very fine coat of Flubenvet and cutting the bread into tiny cubes before mixing with half a days feed (then repeating in the afternoon)

We (Me and Ninja) are now four days in and most of the symptoms are now gone, I have a proud little boy who is now holding his head up high, sleeping with it under his wing (but only at night), darting around quick enough to catch unsuspecting flies and has found a little voice, he chirps at me continuously, his weezing and struggling for breath has gone but replaced with a crackling sound like a Geiger counter which I am sure is just part of the road to full recovery, he is also taking a pride in his appearance and spends more time preening the waxy tubes from his baby feathers than my son spent on skin care in his teens, ( I do not miss those days, I was a hero when he was 5 and a complete plonker when he was 15 ? we are great now but living in different houses helped)

THANK YOU; So a big thank you to Beantrea, Mullethunter, Sentient, WhitchHazel, The Dogmother, Chickabee, Clairabella and Coco You do know that saving a little birds life makes you responsible for them forever don't you ?

Kind regards to all 1600 readers of the thread too Mr H (Steve)

Sorry my new found friends but this will make no sense at all because "I cant flippin remember" was only the punch line, the joke got censored and I rightly chastised will never talk of this again, I will simply revert to my stock answer if questioned of "Ask your mother"

At one point my colleagues asked me if they could meet my parents....

Probably to see where all the cuckoo comes from... We'll get along perfectly!

We will but you will need to catch the jokes quick before Ben cuts the good bits out bless him, and I end up on the naughty chair!

Glad Ninja is getting better, you have been amazing with him, not everyone would do what you have done with an animal they found. Live your posts, they really make me smile so keep em coming. :D:D

Thank you I appreciate that, as sad as it sounds I feel happier around animals nowadays than people and they (the animals) seem to get that, after moving here three years ago I started work on my garden and in two weeks I had a Robin eating out of my hand, how could I have raced around all over the country with my job for the previous 25 years and not even noticed them unless one hit my car ? Fortunately its never too late and the waifs and strays keep seeking me out now so they get to stay at the "Hotel del Mr H" until they grow up or recuperate and return to the wild, certain ones stay like Ninja, but others would compromise my availability to help other breeds if they stayed so rehoming is best ( I nursed a large buzzard who lost half a wing on the road two years ago and he now lives permanently at the Raptor centre in Huntingdon, Cambs) nothing has ever been more rewarding as you can see from attached photos of Fred keeping warm on one of my old laptops in 2012;

Not many people get that privilege.

No he mated up with a local this year, he was one of two I reared at the same time last year, they roosted in the conservatory and flew around the garden in the day which is ok with Rooks because they are clever enough to understand whats best for them and stick with you until something better comes along, they both mated up this year and one pair comes back every other day screaming until I serve a GoCat breakfast to the garden shed roof, they are both very standoff ish now too which is comforting, random humans will never be able to get close to them.

It doesn't bare thinking about how cruel some people can be, but I forgot to say I am not on my own in the "Hospital del Mr H", nurse Jess loves the birds too and will not go anywhere without Daffy.

What's the Ninja News this week?

Good morning from Ninja news in Lincolnshire, Sorry I did not update earlier Its been very busy here this week so not had a lot of time, I volunteer as a member of the Fenland Mountain Rescue Team and I have been "on call" in the Operation centre most nights this week, we train relentlessly and use the stand by time to introduce the public who attend during warm weather to stay safe and not put themselves or others in danger.

Ninja is now symptom free and fitting himself in to daily life perfectly, he is very placid and likes nothing more than a cuddle, although the garden is the best place for him during the day, once his crop is full he comes in and sits on my desk preening or sleeping, not sure if he should be doing more productive or should I say destructive stuff outside but he is very content and weight has increased daily so I am sure its all good
