Are hens welcome in your house ?

Recommended Posts

I haven't had mine for too long but we have one who seems to be afraid of nothing! If the back door is open she is in the kitchen pecking things off the floor or trying to see what's in the food waste container (not much in our house)

If I let them in the house my OH would think I've gone bonkers  so no I have to discourage it.

I have only let one hen stay in the kitchen....and that was in a cat carrier when we had a fox attack!

Mine are allowed to come in from time to time. The whole downstairs is granite floored so poops can be scooped up and bleached if they occur.

People seem to be funny about chickens coming in the house, yet these are often the same people who will happily allow cats all over their kitchen work surfaces, and dogs on their sofas and in their beds.

My dogs are allowed upstairs and on the bed for a cuddle just before I get up in the morning but if the pooped indiscriminately like my girls do then they would live outside in a cage....and the korma smelly type poo's....no no no :shameonu:

LOL, but they still have pooey bums that get on your sheets!!!

Honestly, my friends are quite amazed at what I am like since I got the girls. I am known for being a clean freak who never has a thing out of place in a spotless house in my circle of friends

I wouldn't even have carpets in my house because they are so unhygienic (to be fair they still make me cringe a bit!), yet since I got the girls the are allowed to rampage through the kitchen on occasion and I don't bat an eyelid if they poop on the floor. It takes seconds to scoop it up with a bit of kitchen roll and clean the area with some antibacterial spray. I do realise the irony in this!

They don't come in that often (the clean freak inside me is still there), mostly on a weekend morning before I am due to hoover and mop but I do like them coming in if I am honest. They are my babies! The fact that they find it hard to run on the shiny floor and scoot all over the place makes me smile too.

My cat doesn't have a pooey bum! She cleans it thoroughly! With her tongue that is... But that is besides the point! :notalk:

The fact that she sometimes decides my forehead needs cleaning... That is a whole other matter...

Absolutely not, unless they are ill and need to be tended to. Even then they don't get beyond the porch.

Ditto, mine don't even get allowed onto the patio.

Besides, I wouldn't like to bet on their chances of survival in a house with 2 working lurchers and 2 cats! My dogs aren't allowed on the furniture, nor upstairs. Having said that, I grew up with crates of chicks by the Rayburn in my grandfolks kitchen

I just love that picture Chickabee! My chooks are not supposed to come in the house or even onto the patio as OH has OCD, however he also finds it hard to remember to keep the back door shut so before now I have been fetched from my study with the cry of "There is a chicken in the dog basket in the kitchen, and a duck waddling around the dining room"

When we first had our orpies they had full free range of the garden. One year DD and I were in the living room when we heard a tiny whiiiiiinge. The back door had blown open and they'd wandered through the kitchen into the hallway! 3 little - or rather 3 big heads peering round the door!

With all the poo on the patio it was soon fenced off for the grown ups. More recently the top half of the garden has been fenced off. I have had them indoors for bathing and administering medicine - which is done in the utility room. When we had a silkie she used to get so soggy in the rain I always had her in the lounge by the radiator while blow drying her. She loved it so much she used to lift her wings to get a blast of warm air underneath. Each time that happened there would be towels to stop any poo.

But then again sometimes they have been allowed inside for a cuddle - but only one at a time, and with a towel underneath just in case! I haven't had either of our newbies inside for that - just our old ones.
