auntielizzie
I have made an appointment with the chicken vet this afternoon. Bertha was a bit poorly a couple of weeks ago; withdrawn, not eating, very mucky bottom. I took her to the local vet (not my usual chicken vet as it was the weekend and I couldn't get an appointment). Vet gave her antibiotic (baytril); I separated her and she seemed to pick up. However, over the last two days she is going downhill again. No mucky bottom this time but today she was standing in the run with her eyes closed, in a penguin like stance and doing strange neck movements (looked a bit like she was swallowing really hard and at the same time twisting her neck). She was like this for about 15 minutes then seemed to perk up and go for a walk round the run. I've examined her; she's very thin (lost weight quickly since I last picked her up two days ago). No swollen abdomen (to my mind anyway) and tummy doesn't feel squishy or hot. No other signs of disease or injury. I wormed them last week after she had seemingly recovered following antibiotics. The thing is, Mrs Beaky now seems to have similar symptoms of mucky bottom, tail down a bit and floppy comb. Still eating and drinking and fairly active, but a little bit sleepy. Any ideas? I fear I may be returning from the vets with an empty box later:cry:
auntielizzie
Sadly Bertha was very poorly and had to be pts She had developed an impacted crop and had become very dehydrated. I'm annoyed with myself for not noticing the crop, although this had happened since the weekend. She had lost a lot of weight. She had a huge liver tumour about the size of a golf ball. This would have been slow growing and vet is not certain what part this had to play in her recent illness. It could have been coxoidosis (excuse spelling). As Mrs Beaky has mucky bottom and runny poos I am taking her to the vets tomorrow and may have her poo tested to be sure. Claireabella
So sorry to hear that Auntielizzie I lost my Fleur in July to impacted crop and possibly impacted gizzard and/or tumour in her digestive system; it's very sad. Retfords offer a very good service at reasonable prices if you were thinking of sending a sample to be tested. I hope Mrs Beaky is ok.
