Grandmashazzie
We have lived here for 23 years and are moving 1/3 mile down the road to a sweet little bungalow which has sea views and is being totally renovated.Needless to say the builders are behind, the kitchen won't be ready until mid Nov and we move on the 29 th Oct.I put my back out 3 weeks ago and it is only now feeling ok ish so started packing pic etc.OHWho has been working like a demon trying to clear roof space, lifted box of pictures and one wooden frame sort of feel apart and he sliced open his thumb on the glass. One trip to casualty and five stitches later and he is told not to lift anything!! Help,we are a pair of crocks.I really cannot see this house cleared in 10 days and the WIR moved and to think in the summer I thought at this stage I would be carefully doing one room at a time before the big move. Willow
Oh dear TBH if you can manage to pay the extra I would get your removal people to pack your boxes and move the WIR. Costly but would give you peace of mind. Your removal costs averaged out over the last 20 years would still be very low Hope it all goes well
Grandmashazzie
That Willow is a very good suggestion.Because we are just moving short distance we just thought we would get on and do it ourselves.I may look into that, but I think I'm a bit odd.I don't really want strangers traipsing through and packing my stuff. But if needs must. Beantree
We helped a friend pack all his stuff into a lorry to move. We were moving a year later and his advice to us, knowing we had three times as much stuff, was to start packing now! So we did, but still had to take 3 months off work to get it all done in time. My advice is the same as Willow. You need to get some help and to get it immediately. The alternative is to delay the move.
CatieB
I can understand your reluctance to get people in, I used to feel like that. However when we last moved we had little choice due to me having a toddler, no family and OHs job was manic. So we paid a company to pack it up and move us. I would never look back. It was amazing and they were so helpful with tips as well as the practical stuff. Worth every single penny. In fact so worthwhile we tipped each man £20 as they'd been so helpful. Get rid of your stress and get on that phone!!!
Valkyrie
I agree - I was expecting my DD in a few days and had a 20 month old in tow as well - the movers were absolutely brilliant. We did some things but my goodness it was all neatly done over a couple of days even with DS trying to help!
Bramble
I sympathise! I moved about 6 years ago, having "only" been in my previous house for 8 years I was ASTOUNDED at the amount of junk I'd accumulated. I was very fortunate living just a five minute drive from the tip because I made loads of trips there (how many half-used-set-solid cans of paint can one person accumulate in 8 years!!!) After 23 years I would imagine you have a fair bit more stuff (although I'm a hoarder, so maybe not!!!!) I had removers to move my stuff on the day, but packed everything up by myself (no help from anyone else) and it was HARD and I still managed to leave a few things accidentally that I had intended to take. HUGELY stressful, so if you can get some help I'd grab it with both hands - and asap - removers tend to get booked up some time in advance so if they're available book them!!! That said, my removers were AMAZING on the day, they knew I was on my own and bent over backwards to help - I didn't have chucks then, but did have tropical fish - I "dealt" with the fish, but the removal men advised that we put the fish tank on last so that it would come off the van first at the new house and the fish could move in quickly, BRILLIANT!!! Minnie&Moose
Last time we moved, both of us were working full-time with no capacity to take time off other than the 2 days it took to move and we had pets and a 4 year old. We had the removal people do most of our packing for us - and we were only moving 3 doors down the road! Given it took 6 of them a whole day just to pack our books I thought it was well worth the extra cost (they even unpacked the books for us - though we did have to rearrange them afterwards ). I would never consider doing the packing again - though I would always pack fragile things myself like pottery, pictures and mirrors - oh and the coffee, kettle and chocolate biscuits of course .
