Appendicitis?

Recommended Posts

In brief - My question, if anyone could help is, will taking antibiotics for two days mask a poorly appendix in an ultrasound or will it still show up?? My GP thinks I have a grumbling appendix.

Long winded - I have been off work for several weeks with a persistent pain in my right loin. I was first diagnosed as having appendicitis as I had a temperature, as well as the pain and rebound. I was sent to hospital, where I was give a blood and urine test, which all came back negative, I was sent home and told it was a virus. Back to Dr who then suggested a ovarian cyst, I was scanned and small cyst found. I was referred to hospital again and rescanned, the cyst had gone! They didn't look at the appendix, despite me saying.

I still have the right side pain. I finished a course of antibiotics on Thursday and had started to feel better towards the end of taking them. But by Friday the pain was back and over the weekend my temperature and shakes have returned, along with increased pain in my groin, leaving me feeling pretty ill again. I have a ultrasound scan privately this Wednesday, as the earlist I can get one on NHS is on 20th of March! I am worried that the antibiotics might mask any sign of infection or abscess on my appendix and I will have a negative result, so I will be back to square one again. Really fed up!

I think I would go back to GP and insist on a referral via casualty to see if they should just operate. Failing that present at A&E. I can see why you are scared - my ES was sent to casualty yrs back with similar symptons - we never did find out what was wrong. But yours does sound suspiciously like appendicitus. Good luck

My daughter had what we thought might be a grumbling appendix. She ended up going to an out of hours and they felt it was pain related to ovulation. We were told that it is very difficult to pick up anything on scan and that a large number of 'grumbling' appendixes are removed and are found to be healthy. Was your pain on the same side as the ovarian cyst?

I would go to A & E if you are at all unsure especially given that you are hot and have the shakes. Go along with an open mind as to what is could be and let the doctors 'work you up' from scratch. Don't point them too much in any direction. Let them see you with fresh eyes and make a diagnosis based on how you are now.

If your suffering I would just go along to AE. Better to get it thoroughly checked, it is difficult to diagnose.

My daughter had a very similar saga a few years back. The doctors only taking note once she stopped eating  After removing the appendix they said it appeared "normal" but sent it for testing. The results should it contained "Impacted poo" :vom: and was probably going to burst

Best wishes, let us know what happens :anxious:

I agree with advice to go to A&E.........I had my appendix out when I was 13 but, as that was umpty didly years ago, I can't be of much help symptom wise - just remember that it hurt. A lot.

Please do get it checked out quickly....don't wish to be alarmist but, if it is the appendix and it bursts - just better to get it sorted sharpish! May even turn out to be something totally diff and easily copable with .....thats the Drs job!!!!

Sending positive vibes your way....let us know how you do!

I had a grumbling append for months years back . The doctor only admitted me when I began throwing up and pooping and when I belched it smelt bad....nasty appendix it was,

I would go to A&E especially if you have rigors ( shivers) it means you have something that needs sorting out.

Thank you everyone, it has been giving me moderate pain for six weeks now. I will go to A&E if it get any worse, I do hate hospitals, but if things worsen then I have no choice. My OH had repeated bouts of appendicitis about 10 yrs ago, he was in and out of hospital, the last Dr dithered about and when they finally removed it, it was huge and because of this he couldn't have keyhole surgery. He was left with a very deformed wound, in fact a terrible mess.

Thank you for the kind words x

It is not appendicitis, phew, I had a ultrasound and CAT scan today. Still an infection somewhere though, as I was really hot and shaky while the Dr did the ultrasound, which is why he did the CAT as well. Back to my GP again to see what else it might be, could a UTI make me feel this ill for as long?

Hi there :D Well at least you know now.

So, a UTI can make you feel beastly but would easily show up in a urine sample  I once had a really bad UTI which traveled to my kidneys, now that was horrendous. Dreadful back pain, shivery, achy, kind of flu like.

Sorry no answers!! What does you G.P suggest??

One of colleagues has upper abdominal pains, raised tempreture etc for weeks, she had every test known. They thought it was gall stones but was ruled out as was pancreatic inflammation. In the end they think it was muscular although that didn't account for the raised temp but she is ok now....we are a complicated bag of chemicals!!

Oh now it is the appendix!!!! Apparently 'grumbling appendix' rather than full blown appendicitis, (chronic instead of acute). The results showed my large intestine/colon is distended at the point where the appendix is, so I am now on strong antibiotics, as well as the original ones.

Diagnosis seems to change with the wind, although the ache is still stubbornly there. Gavclojak, we most certainly are a complex bag!

Ah the appendicitis merry-go-round.

I would say after our experience, if you feel any worse just go to A&E. Our consultant said "better out than in" once they start to cause trouble. If it bursts it is very serious indeed. Harriet was happy to lose hers and hasn't looked back. It was keyhole surgery to.....so nothing to see

Best wishes to to you :D

Oh dear :( Dare I ask .......have you read the side effects section?? Sound like a bad reaction :( I'd get in touch with your G.P. Sadly I've had a couple of bad allergic reactions to meds, one put me in hospital for 2 days  They are now on my notes as I can not have them again!!!!!

After taking the antibiotics for the course, I briefly felt better, but all the pains have come back. I saw a consultant surgeon today and will be have an appendectomy on 1st April, it was felt best to deal with it before it potentially becomes an emergency. Hopefully it should all be resolved finally!

Ah, I've been checking in to see if you had an update :D Well, at least you know where you are now and it will soon be sorted :D Will it be keyhole surgery? You can't really see any scars on my daughters tummy now :D:D

Best wishes for it to go smoothy and a speedy recovery :D
