AJuff
Silly question to ask but why are all these lovely permanent runs built so high. Do the chikens jump and fly in them or is it for us to get in and clean them? Just curious as I'm looking to plan a run for my chooks. Christian
I think its just to give the owner room to clean them out. Makes life a bit easier.
Cinnamon
Mine (see link below) is head height so I can get in & walk around easily
AJuff
Ohhh, I like your run. I've just come in from the garden after identifying a perfect area for a run to be built. How wide is you run if you don't mind me asking? The space I was looking at may be a bit narrow.
Guest
My old purpose built run was 8 foot high, but one of my little darlings would still manage to leg it over the top, and get into next doors garden!
xChicken04x
Ours is just high so we can stand in there and clean it out easily and if we need to get in we can.
Egluntyne
Another consideration is that Monsieur Reynard can jump a six foot fence, but anything over he would have more difficulty with. Especially with a hen in his mouth so he would have to drop her to get out.
AJuff
Ahh I see now. I have been pondering and planning a new run all afternoon. Very sad I know but very exciting to me. I have decided to keep it high to accomodate the high wall which they might enjoy perching on. I was debating putting a chicken wire roof on it just in case Miss Flighty, alias Heather, decides to go over it!
The Pearsons
My hen run (hencatraz) hasn't got a top..... so far no hens have escaped over it (but one did dig herself under the wire - to get to my DH who was digging in the rose bed....... The wire around hencatraz is 8 ft high..... Helen in Hume
Mrs Frugal
Lovely OH has just built me a new run (see my album link in my sig) and I can stand upright in it and it's so much better when it comes to cleaning the girls out. They've got oodles of room too .
theherd123
Kate i love it! The colour is beautiful. So when are you going to fill it with more chooks?
Mrs Frugal
I rang the breeder near us at the weekend to see if he'd got any POL Sussex ladies but he's not got any until mid to end of September . Good job I'm a patient bunny . The run is that colour because our garden is so tiny that it has to look pretty as it's all we can see out of our sitting room and kitchen windows . I'm chuffed to bits with it as LSH has done a fab job and the girls have a smashing garden to the left hand side all to themselves too .
