clucker1
Has anyone else had one of their chickens spooked and then it flew in to the fence and broke its neck dying jog pretty instantly. This all happened very quickly this afternoon to my second oldest chicken, who I think was becoming egg bound as she was very heavy. I don't think the others will care as "Ooops, word censored!"ody liked her, she was my only white star. And probably the last as she was a meanie to the others. Luvachicken
Aww, that's sad, poor little thing. I did have one that died from shock after a massive thunderstorm. She was not much liked either and was quite spiteful.
clucker1
Aw, thanks Luvachicken...that's very kind of you. OH was out there when it happened and she broke her neck. It was so very quick. Not nice to witness. She flew in completely the opposite direction to their normal direction. It might well have saved her from peritonitis though as someone has been laying very large eggs and it was only a couple of days ago I commented on the fact that whoever it was wouldn't last much longer laying such huge eggs. OH did say she was very heavy. The other Sussex/white star we had at school was a complete bully too. Anyway, bless here, she lived til nearly 3 years old. Thanks again. Beantree
We had a Cream Legbar get so excited at grain treat time she had a heart attack, but never had one fly into the fencing. Perhaps her eyesight was failing?
sjp
like luvachicken I've had one the died as a result of a big thunderstorm we had mid January 2 or 3 years back we were right at the centre of it I think the other 2 that died a few weeks later were probably a result of it as well
clucker1
Braintree, yes I was wondering about her eyesight....she was very nearly 3 years old so an older chicken, I thought the light sussexs were supposed to live quite a long time, but now I'll never know. I'm going to give them all eyesight testing now with prescription glasses to make sure they can see 6 foot panelled fencing! No large eggs today , they were coming in at @100g, will see if anyone else is laying the biggy in the next few days. Also she might have been my "egg eater beginner" though I cured that a couple of weeks ago. Meanwhile the other girls don't seem to be missing her, they are normally quiet for 1-2 of days after a death, in particular Matilda my posh girl, a skyline spends a lot of time looking after chickens if they are unwell bless her. Lewis
Sorry to hear it. The same can happen to healthy animals and is just an unfortunate accident. A friend recently lost his Goshawk in the peak of health who was out hunting, chasing a pheasant and crashed into a fence, very sad
clucker1
Thank you Lewis and that is very sad about the Goshawk.
