Warmest Coat Recommendations please ?

Recommended Posts

I would really like a new coat that goes down to my knees, keeps me warm and dry and doesn't moult feathers faster than my chickens. Also bunging it in the washing machine would be good.

I would love it if it was like a toasty sleeping bag and had cuffs in the sleeves to keep out the wind.

The coat I have at the moment is a Fat Face one.

The feathers fall out all of the time onto my school clothes making me look a bit scruffy before the children come in.

It leaks mostly on the shoulders and neck when it is raining so then I am damp for the rest of the morning and get soaked later standing in the playground at lunchtime.

I've looked at some online in The North Face but they all seem to have feathers and I can't find details about washing.

Can any of you lovely chook friends suggest a nice, warm coat ?

Thank you x

I have just purchased a new coat for very similar reasons! Not for leaking feathers, but water was coming in my pockets making tissues, mints, poop bags all soggy, and it was only just part hip length so my hips and thighs got soaked. I am now the very proud owner of a Seasalt, almost knee length parka style coat. Fully waterproof and windproof, breathable and is like wearing a super comfy sleeping bag. Its not hugely warm for if you do a lot of standing around, but on the dog walk the wind does not go through it at all, and I am only wearing it with my usual combo of vest top and a long sleeve top. No cardi or hoodie like I would do with my previous coat.

Its worth a look now at they have a sale and mine was £60 pff :D I am thrilled with it and wish I bought it back in October last year.

Take a look at Land's End. Mine comes from there and I've had it for years. It still looks good, no feathers escaped, it can go in the washing machine, colour does not fade and you can see the various warmth ratings against each model. At the time I bought it (a good 5 years ago) I looked at North Face, but boy were they expensive, and not as clearly marked for how warm they were either. I think with them you are paying quite a lot for a brand name

My warmest coat I bought year ago in America - Florida would you believe!!! I call it my Ice Station Zebra coat! Down filled and very heavy. Great for watching Hampshire play cricket at Southampton! TOASTY!!! I would think the Canada Goose ones are similar and hopefully not as heavy. For our normal outdoor walkabout gear most of ours are North Face. Hubby has layers upon layers and I have a gilet type which I think is merino wool with just a normal t-shirt (organic cotton £10 John Lewis) and brushed cotton long sleeved shirt (mens North Coast) from M&S can't remember cost.

We go to Snow and Rock in Chertsey and they are really helpful there - I need to get another spare set of walking boots so if you would like to come with me any time I'd gladly take you for a look around. Lots of coats there in all sizes. My mum got a puffed one and is highly delighted as she's toasty and warm:

Just looked at Canada Goose and nearly fell off my chair

:lol::lol::lol:

Yes they were quite expensive weren't they

I did manage to get a nice new coat this morning though

Went for one in the Seasalt shop - sadly not in the sale though :(

And they even let me try it outside to test it in the wind chill

It worked a treat, now I just need the cold weather to stay and perhaps a bit of rain to test it.

Which Seasalt coat did you get, Luvachicken?

I've just bought one of their raincoats (expecting a wet summer  ) off ebay, secondhand of course, and just wondered what they are like. The one I have bought retails at around £120, and is tin cloth cotton.

Not had any experience of Seasalt, but always love browsing on ebay!

I bought the Plant Hunter coat Charlottechicken and have been nice and toasty ever since.

Haven't had any real rain to test it in yet but tomorrow looks promising

Was a bit cross at school yesterday though as some children had been playing with sneaked in nail varnish

Of course I didn't realise it was wet on a child's hands until it was all over my hands.

Typically there was a bit on my cuff which I spotted today so I showed those children and got cross with them again - fortunately, being children's nail varnish, I got it off with a wet paper towel :D

Hopefully no harm done.
