patsylabrador
I like to invite the kids over for the evening with a theme. When they were little we had themed days. Because I taught them at home I found that a fun way of teaching culture, history, geography, cooking etc. It's a habit that's stuck although obviously I don't teach them anymore and we don't dress up in costumes. Anyway, cutting to the chase, next week we're having an Amelie themed evening because we all like the film and we have a geography board game so that will do for the board game but my mind has gone completely blank about snacks. I can't think of anything especially French for small party snacks. Any ideas? I'd be very grateful for a couple of ideas, DD is veggie so I always like to make sure there's a nice spread for her and not just a couple of after thoughts. The last one we did was Japanese with some snacks we brought back, those snacks were odd and I ended up putting on a couple of pizzas. Not quite what chefs would call fusion cooking. soapdragon
Have you got an Aldi or Lidl close by that you could pop into for inspiration? Otherwise, what about 'ordinary' things but with French names? Ie: Le Sandwich Jambon, pomme chips, salad Nicouse (however you spell it; that actually IS French!) I am sure you get the idea! Oh and lots of Vin Blanc et Rouge, naturellement !
patsylabrador
An Aldi opened in our high Street a couple of weeks ago. I'll go and have a look. Inspiration though with your jambon sandwich, I could make some croque monsieur and cut them into fingers, I could make them without jambon for DD. Merci. dancing cloud
Croque monsieur (probably not spelled like that)? Those toasted ham and cheese sandwich thingies. Crepes suzette Coq au vin Lots of vin ! When I was in France, they didn't really go a bundle on the whole veggie thing and I ended up living on fries, pizza and omelettes. Actually I most like soapdragon's idea of giving the food French names - maybe get people to guess what its name would be in French? Or give them little flags with the French names on to stick in the dish they think it belongs to? Can we come?
patsylabrador
I love the flag idea, we enjoy quizzes so that would be a fun thing to do......and yes, lots of vin. Merci.

Luvachicken
" I will say zis onleee once..." and "allo allo" evening. I used to love Allo allo How about a melted camembert or brie and dunking things into it ? Croutons ? ... are they French ?
Daphne
Crudités will be perfect for veggies, vol au vents, little toasts with toppings (can't think what they are called) like pate (meat or veggie) and tapenade. Tell them they are 'amuse bouches' tuck in, and enjoy. Oh and you could use a red check tablecloth if you find one! French onion soup if it's chilly, served in little cups with cheesy croutons. When we lived in France all our aperitif snacks came prepackaged, so don't be ashamed to serve them, saves a lot of time I'll bring a bottle of pink
