soapdragon
Only two weeks to go before the summer hols....just holding that thought! Feeling frazzled and begrumpled; ES is moving up to secondary in Sept and has had many, many settling sessions at all sorts of odd hours where I have had to pick him up from school drop him off 10 miles further on at secondary, hang about for an hour then drive him back. He has had three days this week of attending secondary full time and going in on the bus, as he will from Sept, but getting him out of the house a full half hour earlier has been a nightmare and stressful. I am pleased he is doing all this as will hopefully make it easier come September - esp given his Aspergers - but is a bit of a logistical nightmare! His year group at primary are also staging The Tempest next Wednesday with lots of extra rehersals after school and his cycle test is next Thursday at school with lots of practice in between. Maypole (yes, Maypole in July....same every year ) so much practice for that too...big fundraiser for the school as they have a hog roast afterwards. YS has had to fit in with all this and, much to his disgust, practice Maypole dancing with girls - eughh - also me trying to fit in usual work commitments plus some extra (I need to get in as much extra as poss as can't work over the summer as don't have childcare and want to be with the boys anyway!) OH away variously in the States and Liverpool so no aid there as he just keeps moaning about hotels and dinners (give me half a bloomin' chance at staying in a hotel and not having to shop for and cook what I am going to eat!) And breeeeatttthe.........Thanks for reading.....I do feel better now Am sooo looking forward to those weeks when we can all still be in our nightclothes at mid day even if the house is permanently littered with Lego and reverberating to the sound of Ed Sheeran and Pirates of the Carribean on the Wii. We have picnics planned, I want to take the boys riding and catch up with NCT mates and their children of the same age as mine that we only see once a year in the summer! I am all too aware that the boys will grow up too fast and so always make the most of every long summer hol to do as much as possible and make memories. Lots of the other mums at school are moaning about the 6 plus weeks and what a nightmare they will be......I want to enjoy every minute but just get through the next 2 weeks with sanity intact first How is everyone else with small people coping in the runup? And any memories from those with larger people who are doing their own thing now? What are you all planning with children/grandchildren over the summer? chickencam
I love the summer holidays with my three, as you say just a time to kick back and make memories. It is hard for those who are working though. I always feel for them having to still get the children up and out early to play schemes etc. I think that children no doubt gain a lot from these schemes but they also lose out on the chance to just get bored and learn to entertain themselves with hobbies and interest, read books etc. Not so sure about getting back lay about 20 year olds from uni though, not just 6 weeks, my DS has been back for a month and has another two months off yet and is pining for his American girlfriend, no idea what he is going to do when Wimbledon ends
Alis girls
Been there etc. Mine now well out of primary - one in uni other finishing yr 10. Hes had a tough yr with OCD diagnosis and wall to wall exams. Hes managed A* in a couple of mocks. That and fighting with another troubled lad, depression and anxiety we are all ready for a rest. Have to keep him busy cos of OCD. Plan to swim when we can. Years of school fetes and all the other stuff and I needed a stiff drink or 10. I am quite glad I am free of that now. Dont worry re time keeping etc he will get used to it. I don't know how strict the school is but even with if they have "issues" (I don't like to use labels) YS's school didnt let it be used as an excuse for any misdemeanour . YS had a few detentions this yr and I have been reassured it won't stop him getting into 6th form. My little boy has grown up. Enjoy your time try not to be anxious they pick up on it. ES's friend had Aspergers and got through unscathed and now at uni. Xx
CatieB
Feeling so jealous Usually I spend all school hols with my son who is now 11 and has his birthday in summer holidays. However this year I am on an intensive university course for 14 months with no school holidays off. I miss him. In fact whilst you all enjoy the hols I'm back at uni full time on 2nd August and I will be there for his birthday too. Grump grump. But I do agree I can't wait for the school holidays, for my son, he's frazzled. First year at secondary has gone well but is tiring and he's feeling under the weather. Love the idea of laying in with Lego scattered around the house. Enjoy the hols
soapdragon
CatieB - do hope you can manage a few days with your son - esp his birthday?! As you say they do get frazzled and everyone has warned me that the 1st year at secondary will shatter my boy too....its a whole new ball game! ES has had three full days settling there and now has a new vocab (apart from the obvious things he's picked up ) he is in a form not a class and has break time not playtime. And we have ALWAYS got Lego scattered round the house...it just multiplies massively during the hols!!!!!! During term time its reasonably under control and you only know its there when you step on it

Alis girls
Thanksfully YS has finished today and has work experience for next 2 weeks so all i have to worry about is where he will eat at lunch time. Some place with a dubious reputation. He was is a fight today - another lad pushed him over - hes been on his case all week. Punches thrown - head of year was very good rang me and OH. told son to go straight home. This other lad is at CAMHS too - hope we dont meet up . Why is everything so darn hard? Lewis
Final push for me too, last exam on Wednesday and fly home on Thursday. Can't wait!
Alis girls
I now have to persuade YS that tracky botttoms are not suitable for work experience. might mean a trip to shops. Groan Thats gonna be fun. Enjoy your hols - and dont worry about next term.
soapdragon
Loved the trackie bottom comment I have the opposite; ES has, as you know, Asperger's, and part of this is his 'eclectic' dress sense. Currently he favours a long woollen overcoat, Australian bush hat and carrying a walking stick I was under the impression it was My job to embarrass HIM not the other way round! Alis girls
Soapdragon your time will come. Wait till he's a teen then strike. Make sure you become a hover mum and insist on knowing the ins and out of a cats bum. Wear clothes they don't like to see you in (recently told by YS I was going through my Islamic stage as wearing a black midi dress) it's actually to make me look slimmer cue for Omlet forum to crack up laughing. But I digress. Kiss them at every opportunity usually top of their heads and call them "my baby" even thou they tower above you. They hate it. My ES son when he was 10 used to do a fair imitation of a Velosiraptor ( sorry can't spell it) nightmare and run to school stalking prey usually a tiny infant who would wail in terror. So embarrassing Bide your time. He sounds a bit Dr Who-ish.
soapdragon
Oh wow...I have so much to look forward to in the embarasssment stakes! Mind you, ES may yet get one over on me- this morning we went into our local town (Wallingford) and came home with a calf length leather coat from a charity shop....mind you, its a bit on the big side so maybe I can wear it a few times first even though it will look as though I have a couple of Members of Parliament handcuffed in the cellar and I have just popped out for some fresh whips:whistle:
Valkyrie
Ugh! That coincides with number one son coming back home - nope, he's not a student but his rental is coming to an end and he'll be home for the summer as he works at a school for incapacitated children (if that's the word - special is another word). But selfish me likes my freedom - I also like his old room! If you don't hear from me around the end of the month I'm sulking!
soapdragon
Try sulking in his old room....he may get the message ! Or buy him a tent Tell him that your house is now a sancturay for incapacitated mothers and you expect to be treated with due reverential care and attention! Worth a try? Alis girls
YS survived first day of work experience. He came home and moaned - bit worrying as thats what I do I think he enjoyed a change. Lots of noisey kids he said. Welcome to my world
Lewis
Where's he doing his work experience? I have 4 weeks placement this summer at two busy vet hospitals; one small animal and one mixed (small, farm, equine). Can't wait for it! I've got new scrubs and overalls ready
Alis girls
Nothing so exciting. Local library. Hopefully it will grow on him.

The Dogmother
I've got an idle 18 year old moping around at home too; she knows that she needs to get her CV in order so that she can get work during her year off, but is doing nowt about it, and then moaning that she has no money She also needs to get her driving test retake sorted. The idea was that she would work this year, then travel next year, with 6 weeks working on a conservation project in Madagascar... I have had words, but she's stuck in her own rut at the moment. Valkyrie
I think they tend to go into shutdown mode. Once that starts it's hard to break out of it. She'll sort herself out soon enough. xxxx
Lewis
Has R finished A2's now? Well done to her! Seems only yesterday you picked me up from Banbury train station for my first Omlet meet, that would have been 7 years ago! Madagascar sounds amazing! If she wants it that badly she'll get it done; I know when I get nagged to do something I put it off out of stubbornness
The Dogmother
Yes, end of As now, grades due 18 August, so a bit of nervousness until then, but I think that she will do well as she put in so much hard work. Yes, I hear about your exploits now, and think back to those early days
soapdragon
That's it....as of 1.00pm we were officially end of term Cakes and biscuits baked and distributed to teachers and tears shed as ES left primary for the last time (officially - with YS still there its not actually goodbye just yet!) Will be bliss not to be tied to the alarm clock tomorrow and have the usual bun fight trying to leave the house on time Happy days
