emmalou
I am new to this egg production lark so bear with me please. We have had ours for 3 weeks. Every day we have had between 3 and 5 eggs which is great. However yesterday we only had one and today back up to 3. I am not sure how often they should lay as 24 week old chickens and what is normal? It has been very hot and were producing really well. I was leaving their window open for fresh air during the night. I have closed it for the past 2 nights has it has been chillier, so maybe thelight change?? I also removed one nest box out from the roosting area 2 days ago that they were using. One did leave an egg where the old nest box was 2 days ago. They were pooping too near the box so moved it into the nest box area. I have started cider vinegar today but think what I have written is probably normal but just need some advice please? Cat tails
They do sometimes skip a day and if more chickens have their skip day on the same day, you might have one or no eggs. I really wouldn't worry too much. As you say they are young and new to this egg business.
sjp
that's normal leave the window open till winter ventilation is more important than the risk they might get cold they won't they have feathers for a reason if the temp goes down to -10 then close the window at night
emmalou
The temp has been up to 38 so was really necessary to leave the little window open. The last couple of days has been 15 and a little breezy and quite chilly in the mornings so have shut the little window. Didn't know whether the change in light at night would be enough to change things? I hear they need 14-16 hrs of daylight per day.
mullethunter
hear they need 14-16 hrs of daylight per day. I've read that too, but seeing as mine started laying at the end of January it can't be strictly true or that simple.
sjp
hear they need 14-16 hrs of daylight per day. We're at that at the moment here in the West Midlands sunrise is 05:05 sunset is a little after 21:00 tomorrow pullets do take a few weeks to get into the habit of laying and even then some never quite perform as the ' books ' say they will as long as they lay and egg or two and are happy and they get to have the occasional fight and squabble and one or 2 get to hatch and raise 3or 4 chicks a then for me that's good enough
Blackrocksrock
They certainly wont get cold at 15 degrees - it has hardly been that here all summer!! - I dont shut the eglu door unless it is very very frosty - I do have a run cover on the eglu run of plastic which keeps out the very cold wind but they dont seem to feel the cold at all and free range out in the snow and frost too. And in the north of Scotland there is not a lot of daylight in the winter and mine always lay all winter too unless they are moulting. They are just young yet and will sort out soon I am sure.
