SeramaSilly
Hi there, Does anyone keep seramas here? This is my first year with seramas and I'm wondering how others cope with them in winter. One breeder told me to treat them the same as any other chicken and another told me they needed heat in winter. What do you do?? xx
Cat tails
Curious to hear this too, since DM told me Dutch bantams weren't very cold resistent either.
Lewis
I know lots of breeders that keep them and all do very differently. There can be quite a difference in size between them and I think the frizzles would feel the cold more than others. One brings his into heated sheds where they are kept in dog crates and indoor rabbit cages, another friend keeps his outside in covered runs with the Pekins and they seem to do just fine. Personally I don't have them as they're too small to go in with our large fowl but if I did, I would keep them in a bantam only group in a very covered run that I know would be dry and have protection from the elements. SeramaSilly
Thanks Lewis! My run is already covered but I've ordered some tarps to cover 2/3 of the run too plus I'm thinking of getting a couple of fat pekins who will act as duvets for them hopefully! x
SeramaSilly
But if they really look cold they might have to live in my porch in an indoor rabbit cage. x
The Dogmother
Curious to hear this too, since DM told me Dutch bantams weren't very cold resistent either. I have had Dutch bantams in the past, and they weren't very hardy. My run is in a sheltered area, but I would make sure that they had protection against the elements. I know someone who had Seramas and they had an indoor coop/run which they kept them in during the winter.
Cat tails
I have the clear cover over the run. I have some high perches, which keeps the out of the wind too. Will see how they fare and otherwise, they'll just camp out inside at night. Might need to learn knitting... to make little chicken jumpers! Like everyone on facebook keeps suggesting I should do!
