cheryllh
After trying to get hold of a second hand cube we have bitten tne bullet and this morning took delivery of a new cube and 2 mtr run from, omlet. We plan on the chickens having free run of the garden and only in the run when we are not home. We have not kept chickens for a few years so looking for some advice on the best to buy for egg laying? Living in Wales i have checked the defra site but still unsure if we can purchase any at the moment? Thankyou.
Luvachicken
Congratulations on getting your cube What colour did you get ? I don't know on the best egg layers as I only have Pekins And I think you can still buy chickens right now without any DEFRA worries as long as you have good bio security. Grandmashazzie
In my experience the best layers are the little brown hen. My best layers ever were my ex batts. I still have one of my original 12 coming up to 4 years free in September.

Chickabee
How exciting Colombian blactails, Black rocks, Speckledys, Bluebells and Columbines. White Stars are good, but they seem to wear themselves out, poor things.
Lewis
Congratulations! If you're looking for lots of eggs I would get hybrids, they come in lots of different colours, lay different coloured eggs and most will lay an egg every day. Whereabouts in Wales are you? Guidelines vary depending on location but briefly, they can only free range under netting, ensuring feed and water are covered. The specific advice for Wales can be found here. I know poultry supplies in a few parts of Wales having studied there so may be able to recommend somewhere to buy them from
cheryllh
Thank you all for your replies we went for the green cube but still in the boxes at the moment, will do some research into the hens suggested this weekend. It has been a few years since my last chickens and after suffering from mite problems in the wooden coops thought I would give this cube a go. Don't know whose more excited me or my granddaughter.
