Johnychick
I’ve just read that birds eating pumpkin will produce eggs with a dark golden yolk. Has anyone tried this after Halloween? I’ll certainly remember to try it next year.
sjp
I've never found it happen with mine but it could be down to the variety of pumpkin some of the Mediterranean ones do have a darker orange flesh than the 'Halloween' pumpkin. I seem to struggle to grow the nicer Mediterranean ones before I had the chickens I used to grow quite good examples
Luvachicken
I bought mine pumpkin specially but they didn't really like it They didn't like it last year either so I have made a point of putting Do Not Buy Pumpkin on the calendar for next year Broccoli and cabbage give a lovely coloured yolk though. The Dogmother
Feeding them dark greenery such as savoy cabbage, spinach, cavolo nero etc will give the yolks that dark hue, but take care not to give them too much and only at the end of the day. Their pellets must make up 98% of their diet and anything extra to that needs to be in small portions and at the end of the day.
Mars
Tried that last year, didn't make any difference, but my hens have access to green grass 24/
Johnychick
Mine loved meal worms - and if I got the spade out to dig over some soil they would go crazy for live earthworms
