Old Photos

Recommended Posts

OH has just had to remove some stuff from the loft so that the plumber can get up there next week (WHOLE different story  ) so we have taken the opportunity to go through some (but by no means ALL) boxes and work out what can go.

One of the boxes was crammed with photos, all in their Truprint (remember them!?) and Boot's pouches, complete with negatives. The boys (13 and so very nearly 10) were fascinated; not merely by very old photos of their mad parents doing stupid things and with crazy hair - or, in OH's case, hair full stop - but by the whole concept of camera, film....taking or sending the film to be processed then getting the photos back a week later! Yet one more aspect of my earlier life that they will never experience (along with a 'proper' telephone  )

Brought back all the excitement of getting that envelope of pictures back after the holiday - by which time you'd forgotten most of it anyway! Then finding that most of the 24 or 36 were so dark that you couldn't work out what they were of. Lots of the pics I found today were like that with the obligatory quality control sticker advising you to use the flash!!! Oh Happy Days!

I sorted mine out a while ago. I was very ruthless and only kept a couple of each of the pets we have had. Then discarded really bad shots and scenery,I had no idea where it was. I then divided them into family, each child and others. Then gave each one their box of photos with a file of all their school reports etc. It cleared a space in my roof space. My friend whose mum has just died found a box of air mail letters her dad sent home in the 50s . There is another thing our children know little about, letters.

How funny that your boys found it strange!

But they have known no different! We are now such an 'immediate' society that, for them, the thought of having to wait for the pics to be processed was very odd. They have grown up with the digi age of snap it now, snap it 10 times and delete what didn't come out!

What innocent times we once inhabited!

I have another problem having sorted thro dad's stuff we have lots of black and white photos of wooden

Looking people grinning into the camera in various fashions. Black and white is so forgiving as you get older. But what do I do with them. Many of them died before my son's came along. I feel bad shredding them.

We have a box full that need to go into albums. I love the idea of passing them onto each child with their reports etc. Makes sense :D

We had an evening over Christmas watching old camcorder footage of when the children were very small. It was very funny and ED had vowed never to have children just in case she ends up with one like her! She was horrified by how bossy and attention seeking she was

I've recently taken all mine out of albums and envelopes and poured them all into a big storage box. I discarded a lot of poor photos. I keep them under the stairs so that I can just slide out the box and grab a handful. I enjoy them not being organised more than I enjoyed them arranged. I haven't included any photos of my family in the box as being estranged from them it just makes me feel irritated when I look at them. My husband has put them somewhere safe.

I occasionally get digital photos printed to add to the collection. It's incredibly easy if you haven't tried it.
