bluekarin
My ed is at uni, second year, and the halls she is in is being refurbed. She thought her room, which is an adapted room so bigger than normal with a wet room (sounds nicer than it is) would be done when she comes back home at the end of term in May. She had a knock at her door today and has been told she needs to move rooms, I am assuming very soon, to a room which is too small to have her wheelchair in, a tiny shower with no seat and the use of a kitchen with no lowered surface so she can prepare her meals, and no auto openers on the doors which are too heavy for her to open without causing a lot of pain. What can she do about this? I have told her they can't make her move rooms, and offered to come down to speak to the halls manager with her. Her pain levels have sky rocketed due to the stress this has caused. I am so furious for her! What can we all do to help. They can't do this, surely? I'm hoping its a misunderstanding
Valkyrie
That's crazy. I think (but I'm not certain) that by law they have to make provisions. The fact that hers is being removed is so wrong. How the heck do they think she'll manage with the shower! And high kitchen level is dangerous - er health and safety - could knock hot water on herself and burn! Nope, there must be someone that you can tackle! And big hugs to her xx
bluekarin
Email has been composed by me and edited by her and sent to student support, just so they have a heads up of her meeting tomorrow. I was gobsmacked when I read her text. I just hope its crossed wires and the woman was talking about when she leaves in May, but somehow I don't think it is. Purplemaniacs
Oh no. I don't know from a legal point of view but surely they have to make suitable provision for disabled students. At school they are adapting the entrance to meet the requirements for disabled access. Surely there is similar legislation for uni halls of residences. Good luck, I hope you get it sorted and that your DD can relax and be in less pain. Best wishes. Chrissie
Grandmashazzie
Gosh, hope it is misunderstanding. You wouldn’t think they would be so stupid, thoughtless, unfeeling etc etc. I hope it is sorted and as you say room will be vacant end of May,they can do refurb then. Alis girls
This is awful after everything she went thro before in Bristol. This is discrimination surely. Hopefully its a misunderstanding - if not I would be posting it on social media. Am I right in thinking shes in accomodation for a disabled person - are there other disabled students there? Hope you get it sorted. Hugs Ali x
soapdragon
Outraged to hear about this which involves a number of issues not least Health and Safety and Discrimination. Does the Uni not have a 'Disabled policy' possibly published on their on line blurb? If she cannot operate the doors then she cannot access the room....simple as! Suitable disabled facilities and access has to be provided by law; I am a school Governor and we have just had to install handrails and a ramp for a specific student. I think they are trying to intimidate her........either that or its a huge misunderstanding. Does she have a favourite tutor who could take up her cause? Those in charge of rooms, building etc need to speak to someone who knows your ED and can confirm and verify her specific needs. So sorry that it's causing additional pain and stress for your ED and hope you can get it sorted quickly.
bluekarin
Student support have passed her email onto the relevant person so hopefully they will help. She did speak to the halls manager who said they could work around her while she is still in the room, but they would need to run that by uni first, so still no idea what will happen. She seems calmer today which is good. The room she is in is specially adapted for disabled people. It is twice as big as the others so a wheelchair can be used in it. There is an emergency pull cord just in case, both next to her bed and in the wetroom. The wetroom has a seat in the shower and pull down arm rest things to help get up and down off the loo. The kitchen her room is assigned to has a movable worksurface with a sink on it so she can prepare food and wash up. The cooker is a normal one, but she is ok cooking on it. None of this is in the temp room I shall let you know when I hear anything else. I am so looking forward to Sept as it will be her final year and as she has been so careful with her money these past few years, she has enough to pay for a studio flat for herself. No more sharing a kitchen

mullethunter
Hopefully it’s just a case of the university not thinking properly rather than being willfully awful. I know that’s still really bad, but at least if that’s the case they hopefully will not continue in the same course once it’s been brought to their attention. Surely the refurb of one room can wait until summer?
Valkyrie
I wonder why they don't do it after the students have vacated the premises for the holidays! But glad she's a little better. So unfair to have such unnecessary stress! Fingers crossed they will think twice before they act! Thanks Soapy - I had a feeling it was law. My daughter's new house has a wider than usual front door and downstairs doors for wheelchair access (although I think there's a step at the front door!) but I guess the new houses are built so they can easily be adapted for disabled people if required. Edited to add I guess upstairs is also wider - I never noticed!
GrannyTrish
I would think that disability discrimination would come into this if it isn't crossed wires. So glad that your daughter has calmed down now. It's so not right for the uni to put her through all the stress they've caused.
soapdragon
BK....how is this working out? Have you been able to get to the bottom of it? Hope your DD is feeling more on an even keel now?
bluekarin
She spoke to the accomodation manager who has assured her she will not be moved, and the work done to her room will happen when she leaves in May. So, all that stress for no reason at all. Or, they suddenly realised they might have a disability case against them. She dug out an email this morning from them at the beginning of the year which assured her she would not be moved, but explaining what works were being done. We viewed some studio flats with her a couple of days ago, and although they are expensive, they are amazing. She has wanted to reward herself for her final year by having her own kitchen etc which I think she should, but its up to her.
mullethunter
That’s so good to hear I hope she decides to go for a flat for next year - best way and time for anyone to take the next step to independence.
soapdragon
Phew! But infuriating that she had to go through all that stress. Good luck with the flat hunting!
GrannyTrish
Glad to hear that it all seems settled. Taking the next step to independent living is going to be scary for both of you but it's good that she's thinking that she wants to try it. Good luck! Valkyrie
Bless her little cotton socks. If she wants to have a go then she must have the opportunity, although it'll be touch and go for a while with the savings! Glad it was OK in the end.
