daverave
I'm looking for tips to stop one of my hens from being broody. My light sussex has been broody for two months now and won't come out of the coop. Each day, after my other two hens have laid eggs, I've been taking her out of the coop and locking the door. But I can't seem to break her broodiness! Any tips? I'm concerned that it's damaging her health.
Cat tails
Most here lock a broody hen in a small dog cage with food and water for 3 days and 3 nights. I don’t have a broody cage and too many neighbours, but also luckily no foxes. So I just lock the hen out of the run for two days. And as soon as she is starting to try and destroy the garden, I know she’s ready to go back in. daverave
A broody cage it is then! Any recommendations for buying one, perhaps off e-bay?
Cat tails
The simple wire kind, without solid floor. Put the cage on bricks so cool air can flow underneath the hen.
Lewis
Any wire cat carrier or dog crate will be fine, raise it up and put cups in for food and water
mullethunter
I have this http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/pets-at-home-single-door-dog-crate-x-small-black-7127084p--1 which I use as per Lewis’ picture above.
The Dogmother
Anything wire, which will let the air flow freely is good, prop it up on bricks or similar, pop in some food and water. I use the insert tray to put over the top to stop the others standing on the cage and pooing on her! 3 days 24/7 ought to do it.
