SCRAMBLED-EGGS
Hi, I finally got my lovely eglu Mk 2 and additional outside run up and working and collected my 5 young girls just over a week ago. One started laying the first day, and one the second (they are different breeds and lay different colours) and I was getting more and more eggs each day until 2 days ago when I stopped finding any eggs at all in their next box. Is it likely that young chickens who had just started laying would completely stop again like that? Otherwise, my trouble is that the run is on the only piece of land I have, which is next to a very quiet public path, I have a horrible feeling that people are reaching in and grabbing eggs as they walk past. I need to be able to lock the eglu. Has anyone else come across / solved this issue?
mullethunter
It’s unlikely that they’d all stop at once unless they’re stressed in some way. Are they eating well? They may stop over the next few weeks as they start a partial moult (depends how young they are) but all on the same day would be surprising. Is it possible that either your girls have started to eat the eggs or that a predator (rat or magpie) is able to get access? If you think it’s human thieves, would just a bungee over the egg port make it difficult enough?
The Dogmother
I had this once - stuck a sign on the egg port saying that the birds were on a VERY strong worming regime and it would be dangerous to eat the eggs As MH has said, this seems the most likely option, apart from moulting; the recent cooler weather has triggered a mini-moult in a couple of mine.
