Lovemychooks
I had a phone call today to say that 5 of my chickens had been killed by the fox this afternoon. He took 1 of my origninal battery hens (Bernard) and 3 of my new ones (I think it was Nugget, Chicken Licken and Scraggy) which I only had for 6 weeks. I'm not upset which is strange but I haven't seen them in the light yet, will see them tomorrow morning. I have been meaning to get a Foxwatch for ages and unfortunately something like this had to happen and makes me kick myself for not getting it earlier. Any people thinking about getting one then do because people rave about them.
chelsea
Oh Dear, so sorry to hear about your chooks. Thankyou for posting though and reminding us of how quickly the cunning fox can swoop on our girls. Hugs. xx
Olly
So, so sorry to hear that - what a terrible thing to happen. Without meaning to sound callous, it's good that you have quite a few hens, there will be a big gap in your flock but at least you still have some to greet you in the morning. And at least the ex-batts had several weeks of enjoying life outside the cage. I do recommend getting a Foxwatch, but we are all the same - we don't think we need it until we've had a near miss, or a horrid experience like this. Krysia
So sorry to hear your news. at least you gave the ex batts a well deserved taste of freedom they wouldn't otherwise have known! Big chicken hugs to everyone at yours
Shirl
So sorry to hear you lost so many of your lovely chooks. I lost 1 last week and that was bad enough. I haven't let them out to free range since. I feel so sorry for them.

RubyMurray
Ah, so sad to hear the news. We all have to be extra careful now the weather is getting colder, the foxes will have rumbling tummies now. At the weekend I let Dora and her 12 week old chicks out of their run to roam the back garden, and introduce them to 3 of my other hens. I stayed with them all the time trimming bushes etc, when I needed a wee I called my hubby to watch them, then the phone rang later and I got my son to watch them. That night you ought to have sen the fox in my garden, he went everywhere the chooks had been following their scent! Take care, Dyan
superjules
I'm so, so sorry. I can't imagine how you must be feeling. There have been so many fox attacks in the last fortnight. I think Rubymurray you are dead right. Because of the cold weather, food is scarcer and they are getting hungrier and therefore bolder. We all need to be exceedingly careful. Guest
That's what I was going to say Superjules. There have been so many recently that we should all be extra careful. So sorry to hear about this LovemyChooks.

Lovemychooks
Thanks for your kind words everyone, it really does help. I went to let them out today and they wouldn't come out. I was calling them and then I opened the door fully and it really hit me that Chicken Licken, Bernard, Nugget, Scraggy & Welly weren't there They will get lots of cuddles and treats at the weekend
skye
So sorry to hear your awful news lovemychooks ... hopefully the remaining hens will get their confidence back quickly. Westie
Sorry hear about the chucks, I dread it happening. I went on the web to check out fox watch. It has a limited range and therefore unless you contain the chucks it gets very expensive. It will also affect dogs. I usually leave my chucks semi-free range (ie. I have a flexinet) when I'm not around so it may give piece of mind in these situations. Perhaps Santa may pay us a visit. Has anyone found it not to work? - it's an expensive piece of kit at nearly £50.
