lotlot
Yes i know another question Sorry if i'm annoying, i just want to know chickens are right for me before getting some Anyways...are hens noisy? I know that cockerals will crow, but i have also read that hens can be fairly noisy. I live in a very built up residential area and i don't think my neighbours would appreciate loads of noise. They already complain about my mum's little yorkshire terrier who barely makes a noise, bless him, he just yaps occasionally!!
Noodle
Hi there I think some chickens are noisier than others. My three are noisy if they think I am going to let them out, but I have had no complaints. With a high fence I am not even sure if most of my neighbours know they are there
Egluntyne
They cluck and chatter happily most of the time and Boc Boc loudly if there is danger about. The Boc Boccing is very loud, but their normal going about their business noises are no louder then every day ambient street noise.
Lovemychooks
Oh I love their boc boc boc noise, it's so endearing. Don't hesitate about getting chickens, in fact, why not get some ex-battery hens ? Mine are quite quiet and adorable
Jules.
Certainly nowhere near as loud as next door's dog! (Or my children!)
CatsCube
I never hear a peep out of most of mine, but the columbian (like the arucana makes the odd noise like a rusty gate, and the wyandoote is REALLY noisy, I can hear her from inside the house with the TV on, 'boc boc bocaaaa' I have to go outside and tell her to shush for fear of anoying the neighbours. But again that noise is only ocasional
Tweety
I find that my bantams are much quieter than the big girls, who can be quite noisy at times, particularly my Bluebelle. Bantams also make much less mess, so may be more suitable for you. However, if it is eggs that you are after then you will have to get something larger. Hope this helps-good luck! welsh sarah
hi definately get chickens mine are only noisey if they sense danger which isnt very often luckily, even then i cant see how anyone would complain, you dont here them really when they talk to you it is only audible to you as you are close up and it is lovely do get chickens i took ages wondering about noise and everything else but i love them to bits, best pets i have ever had sarah
Ain't Nobody Here
Mine don't make much noise at all - although recently we've noticed that we can sometimes hear a faint boc boc boccing while we're in the kitchen (which is very close to the eglu). We can only just hear it so the neighbours almost certainly can't (maybe if they're in their garden, but it's not an annoying noise anyway). I live on a housing estate and the noise from cars/kids/etc is far more noticeable.
chocolatedog
The only time my girls are noisy is if they hear/see me coming up the garden towards their run, and then they shout at me for treats or to be let out to free-range (or both!!) It's a shout for attention more than anything else I think..... Or they gently burble away to me when they're out and foraging and I'm talking to them - a very gentle contented kind of noise........ Milly
Mine are chatty but not very noisy. But they sometimes shout loudly when they have laid an egg and want to show off! Milly
chelsea
i think it depends on the breed sometimes. Our 1st chook Ella (rescue hybrid) is very noisy in the garden (espcially on a summers sunny morning) but as she has got older she has become quieter. We have a Maran who is a perky little thing - she only makes noise when she's just laid an egg (she announces it to the rest of the flock) We added 2 cochins to the flock and we specifically picked cochins as they are lazy, docile, quiet and tame (as we are in a cul-de-sac) and we havent heard a peek of noise from them yet - so we picked right!! We've had no complaints from neighbours and mine are mostly noisy when there is a cat in the garden or egg laying going on. As others said - there are noisier things going on around us (dogs barking/cars/mowers etc) Im a born worrier and I think I worry too much most of the time. Guest
they make contented sort of clucky noises most of the time (not loud at all) if a cat comes into the garden or they think there's danger they will make a loud buck bucking noise but because I am here most of the time I can go to them and calm them down. The noise is no worse than a dog barking (in fact, not even as loud) though and the neighbours dogs bark for far longer than my hens do their buck bucking But then, I can only speak for my 4. Rona
The only time I have heard loud noises from my ex-batt girls is when Shiraz is a bit of a bully but that has become less and less as they have settled down, although Shiraz is definately top of the pecking order. Cava is at the bottom and is really sweet, she sings Oooooooh dear dear dear, ooooooooh dear dear dear but really quite quietly. Most of the time they just chunter amongst themselves and make a happy sort of squeaking noise when the get mealworms.

Guest
Gentle clucking and the odd boc boc boooocc is all I get. Now last night - at 10pm when I came home my nextdoor neighbor was sitting in his front garden having a smoke. With his Yorkie who went bananas as I got out of the car. MUCH louder than any hen. superjules
Yep, I'd agree with everyone else. they get a bit rowdy when there's a cat or a squirrel in the garden but other than that they are fine. Even when they're alarmed, they are nowhere near as loud as my loopy springer and "Ooops, word censored!"ody would complain about him. But if so much as a cat's whisker comes over the fence it's boc boc bocaaaaaa!! Otherwise they are very quite. Go on, get some!!!!
welsh sarah
mine are not afraid of our cat, infact she is afraid of them because they chase her, but there is a horrible grey fluffy cat that stalks them and they do make a noise when that comes into the garden, but i chase it off. sarah
little chickadee
Mine have only been noisy when I shut them away because we're in the restricted zone. They're fine now they have a run extension though - not a peep out of them They're having too much fun playing in the hemcore, especially when I hide mealworms! Guest
Also chickens are probably the quietest and easiest to keep of the poultry/foul species... As others have said mine are silent apart from very quiet bok-bok sounds until a potential predator arrives! But they do learn quickly what poses a threat. They don't make any noise when my cats and dogs are arround now, but all hell used to break loose!! lol
BeckyBoo
just to say we have 7 hens which we've had since April or May (whenever Fathers Day was!) and my next door but one asked me last week if someone nearby had hens as he kept thinking he could hear clucking. We're in a row of terraces so he's very near. We've had no complaints. Not sure where you are but why don't you go and visit an Omlet keeper, either cube or standard Eglu, see if in the flesh, if you take your mum I'm sure she'll be convinced. There's a list on here somewhere with a list of people you can go and visit. They are lovely, one of ours is going in to school tomorrow for pet week, to meet the children, they're so funny you'll love it if you get some Mrs Bertie
elpolloloco!
our hens dont make much noise, just the usual clucking which is kinda cute! but, occasionally like in windy or wet weather, or if they fell like they are being ignored, the chicken that is top of the pecking order clucks loudly (well actually it sounds more like a duck!!!) she also does this when having to compete for noise, such as when next doors dog barks!!!!!!!!! or in spring when the birds sing!!!!!!!!!!! so yeah! in general they are quiet though!!!! hope it helps, tap back!!!
