Guest
I like it! On a hot summer's day this Vietnamese Style Tofu Salad does it for me. And yeah, I know it's not summer now... but it's still good. http://www.cauldronfoods.co.uk/static.php?type=recipe&id=

"Repulsive and slimy" - Huh - Mel will probably latch onto that and point out the similarities between me and Tofu. I find the Blue Dragon one a bit slimy, but there are others that are more 'meaty' - a bit like compressed cottage cheese consistancy. chocchick
Yuk! I like quorn, well kind of if it's in the right thing and you can't taste it much.
Sheilaz
My vote was "indifferent", as I'm really trying to like it, and it's OK in small doses, which isn't quite the same as loving it! My daughter has been vegan for a year & cooks for herself. My experiments with tofu have been rather bland, and I'm realising now that the answer, to make the tofu palatable, or even enjoyable, is to have interesting recipes. It is such a useful protein, it's worth another try. So, thanks Graham, I'll certainly be trying that one, for all the family, when she comes home at Easter. Guest
Sheila - I would love to hear what you think of it! Ok, we've had our Tofu haters (and a couple of indifferents). Now let's get some serious Tofu love in here.... anyone... ? (Hope I haven't killed the thread now... )
The Dogmother
Are you a veggie then grd? PS I quite like Tofu, but prefer Quorn if I am on a veggie thing.
Guest
Are you a veggie then grd? PS I quite like Tofu, but prefer Quorn if I am on a veggie thing. No, I'm not - but i do like quite a lot of vegetarian food; it just makes me feel fresh and 'zingy'.
The Dogmother
yeah, me too. I often go for veggie as it's far better than the alternatives. but I have to say that I still like my meat/fish too.
Lesley
Sorry grd - I hate it as well Despite having been veggie for 25 years until recently, I can't stand it. I did try - many times. Your recipe looks better than some i've tried and I may give it another go. The worst is Tofu from Thai Restaurants - it seems to have the texture of car wash sponges
freerange
Tofu in sauce just soaks it up & goes soggy & urgh. I like it best marinated in honey & soy sauce then fried in a hot pan so the outside is crispy.
Karen & co.
I'm sitting on the fence I'm afraid don't really mind it, but it does depend on how it's cooked, the recipe looks good, might give it a try! Karen x
Popcorn
I love it, but I do have to add that I have only ever eaten it cooked by a proffessional. I have a box of Tofu in my fridge and I'm really not sure how to get it tasting its best, so have held off making anything with it so far. Any good marinade suggestions gratefully received
Louise
Try freezing it then defrosting before cooking it stays much firmer and is not slimy at all I voted for indifferent
Mrs Frugal
I've had tofu which has been ready prepared and marinated in something or other which I liked but I don't like it when I prepare it!!
The Dogmother
But doesn't all food taste better when you haven't prepared it yourself? Edited January 23, 2006 by Guest
Guest
Interesting theory Clare. I just took a bite out of a raw potato.... didn't do anything for me.
The Dogmother
There, a quick edit and it's clear - do you understand now graham? PS raw potatoes are poisonous - you want to be careful
Popcorn
But doesn't all food taste better when you haven't prepared it yourself? That'a a good point Clare. AND - wouldn't you be biased anyway if you had prepared and cooked something yourself?! Although I wouldn't go so far as to eat a raw potato to prove a point Graham

Mrs Blue Sky
I like tofu a lot. The Cauldron Vietnamese salad is very lovely too, I've made it lots of times. I think the kind described as "silken" is the slimy stuff; mostly used in Japanese cooking, but any tofu certainly needs flavouring as it has none of its own. Soy sauce, chopped chillies, lime juice, ginger, sherry, garlic, any or all of those, is a good start. As long as it's fried crisp I don't find it gacky to eat... But I am scared of Quorn and suspect it's made of concentrated evil. They made it from a soil-borne bacteria in a lab - I'd rather eat eyeballs frankly. Controversial enough grd?? Nicola H
I think I have only eaten the "silken" tofu because it has been slimy.................But I agree about Quorn it makes me vomit and feel very poorly, it took me a while to realise that it was the quorn that made me poorly, and then i had a look how it was made yukkk !!!
