chrisnrob
Last year we started using some Ecover products (dishwasher tabs, washing up liquid, toilet cleaner and fabric softner) and now we want to try and use as many of the Ecover products as possible. Up until now, I have replaced our usual cleaning products with Ecover ones as and when we ran out of them. However, we have 'stockpiled' others (shower gel, multi-surface cleaner, etc) through buying them when they've been on offer. So, is it 'greener' to dump these now (and if so, how?) and switch to Ecover or carry on using them until they're gone and then buy Ecover products...? Jules.
How about free cycling them? Or give the smellies to a local school/nursing home etc to sell or use? I wouldn't dump them, that defeats the object Or... just use them up yourself.
ali-s
Shame to just throw them away. You could offer them on Freecycle, put up a notice on works noticeboard, an elderly neighbour might appreciate them or a local daycentre or hostel could distribute them. Just a few ideas
chrisnrob
I wouldn't dump them, that defeats the object My thoughts exactly. I like the idea of giving them to someone else to use. When we switched to Ecover toilet cleaner, I took what we had left of the 'traditional' sort and left it in the toilets at work
Charlottechicken
I decluttered all my unwanted toiletries a few months ago and gave all two carrier bags of stuff to a neighbour. She and her teenage daughter were really pleased. I also have a colleague at work with two teenage girls and they get bits and pieces off me occasionally too, when I have my clearouts. I am trying not to accumulate stuff now but I do wonder where it comes from I like the idea of giving it to a home. Are there any drop in centres near you for homeless people? I am sure they would be grateful for shower gel and bathroom cleaning products too.
The Dogmother
I'd Freecycle them Guys. I switched over gradually and most of my cleaning products are now either Ecover or Bio-D, I just phased them in as the others ran out.
Egluntyne
I just replaced all mine with Ecover or home made as the other things ran out. Somethings I use to clean garden furniture rather than use it indoors as so many things make me wheeze I prefer not to use them in the house, but don't want to ditch them as I feel it is wasteful. chrisnrob
Plenty of good ideas there - thanks. I don't mind freecycling full bottles but feel a bit 'odd' about offering half bottles of shower gel - think I'll give them away! Out of interest, where do you buy your Ecover products from? Asda don't have a great range but Tesco have quite a lot. However, I was in Homebase today and have never seen so much Ecover stuff Rob
Lesley
I order it from Goodness Direct - so all the heavy 5 litre stuff is delivered to my door! Some places do refills though, Ryton Garden Shop does.
Egluntyne
We have a super place in Sheffield where you can buy 5 litre bottles of Ecover stuff. It is called Lembas.
bronze
I buy from Suma I would use up the part bottles. Like you I wouldnt feel right offering thoughs but I couldn't just chuck them as a lot of the damage to the environment was done in the manufacture. I'm still going through this process as my MIL takes the slightest opportunity to stock me up on chemicals en masse.
