Yes, it was me that adds Vanish to the wash - I have tried the Ecover bleach powder, I forget it's there - I'll have to decant it into the pink pot when the Vanish is finished.

 

www.goodnessdirect.co.uk carry BioD, Method, Faith in Nature and Ecover brands, although Method is out of stock at the moment. I have emailed them to ask about bulk liquid hand soap - either 1 litre or 5 litre - I'll let you know when I hear from them.

It's interesting that people have said that some of the other products are nicer/cheaper/better than Ecover. As far as I can see, none of the other companies say anything about the methods they use during manufacture whereas Ecover tell you lots about it - their 'green' factory...

 

I guess it depends whether you want to go further than using a product that's green and go for a manufacturing process that's green too?

I use the Ecover washing up liquid but as previously stated (by Vicki?) I use washing up gloves and really hot water, which seems to work. I like the smell of the washing up liquid too

 

I use the toilet cleaner as well, and will be reading this thread to see what else I can switch to, so thanks for starting it Sarah!

I remember reading about BioD being a totally commited green company Rob - that's what got me trying them.

I recently bought the Bio-D bathroom cleaner from Co-op. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it is!

Am impressed with the Method Lavender washing up liquid that I bought this am.

 

Copes well with the grease and is gentle.

 

It states that it is so mild that you don't need marigolds.

 

Can't smell it because I'm all bunged up.

Our Oxfam shop sells Bio D! (I guess only the larger branches). We launched a module of cleaning/green products at the same time as promoting our Christmas gifts. Made me wonder if toilet cleaner was given as a gift to "people who have everything already".

 

I'm gradually trying out the range & I do like them, but prob. Ecover is still my favourite for washing up liquid.

Rob, the Faith in Nature ylang ylang flavoured shower gel is lovely and we sue their shampoos too. My skin and scalp is far less irritable now.

If you have very sensitive skin be careful of Ylang ylang as it is one of the most allergenic essential oils - don't do what I did and find out the hard way

 

Do a patch test before you lather yourself as if you do react it is very bad

 

It is a shame as I love the smell of it just can't put it any where near my skin

We use that shower gel the most as it doesn't aggravate my eczema, which now seems to be in remission.

 

I noticed yesterday that their site had gone AWOL - might be worth trying again soon - it's worth reading.

I use Ecover or Tesco washing up liquid (I especially like Tesco's and have no problem with greasy things and we don't have a dish washer), toilet cleaner, multi purpose spray.

 

These are about the only things you get in our local supermarkets

 

I don't use the washing powder as we all have sensitive skins adn find the only one that doesn't aggravate is Bold

 

Clare I think will have a look at the websites you have suggested and change our shampoos, shower gels and liquid soap.

Try some of the Faith in Nature toiletries Debs - we love them. As soon as I use SLS-loaded products again, the eczema comes straight back

 

Rosie likes their face wash - it smells of lavender and that encourages her to wash her face!

 

I don't have a dishwasher and find that the Bio D washing up liquid shifts most stuff; if something is extra greasy, I just add a scoop of washing soda crystals to the water - that soon gets rid of any slimy stuff! I also use a tablespoon of these crystals in my laundry wash as it helps to soften the water and shift any stains. You can get them cheaply at most supermarkets.

I have to confess to using Flash with bleach or some such product once a fortnight as most of the green products are not up to getting the hard water marks off the shower screen and sink and taps We are in a very hard water area

 

I do use the othergreener products in between though

We used the washing up liquid for quite a while but hubby didn't rate it so he bought 3 bottles of fairy on special offer so that's us for a while I thought it was ok.

 

I also use the fabric softener on the kids synthetic school jumpers etc which is ok not as strong smelling as some others which I count as a good thing, has a slightly odd smell when items are wet but fine when dry, and it is much less gunky in the washing machine.

 

Going back to last years thread about washing machine smells I went back to big box powder and found that not only did the machine smell better but so did the clothes and they were cleaner.

Debs - I use BathPower (http://www.ozkleen.co.uk/products/bath.php) on our shower screen and it's brilliant. It's not as 'green' as Ecover or Bio-D but it's better than Flash!

I use the limescale remover for anything that gets scaled up, it comes in a spray and is excellent and has a pleasant smell too.

 

I've gevine up on the glass in my shower enclosure though - I've even tried chemical limescale removers and vinegar too, and it won't budge - it's as if the glass itself is marked.

I have used metal polish to clean and restore the smooth surface of plastic items, it might just get the coating off your screen.

 

Also, once you have the glass clear how about trying some 'rain away' type product (made for car windscreens) as this evens out the surface of the glass and stops water drops adhering to it.

I will try some of that (I hate having marks on the shower screen) I always felt guilty using Flash. I just need to run down stocks ofwhatever I've got and then do a bulk buy off one of the sites

That sounds like a good idea Claire - do you mean like Brasso or sliver polish? I've got both, so will try them in two different places. I used to always use a squeegee on the shower glass when I had finished, but consigned that to the 'life's too short pile'.

Mine is a liquid one called 'Harringtons Liquid Metal Polish' for brass, copper and silver. The tin is Brasso sized Clare. I also find 'Astonish' good for strange stains and marks, it got rid of silver grey marks on my floor tiles caused by pushing the fridge into position.

I'd forgotten about that.....I used to use Turtle wax. It works well. The suds just slither away.

 

Lemon oil is good too....smells nice and is "greener". You may have to apply it slightly more often though.
