Do you remember all that thing about hidden transfats? Since then, we don't buy any ready meals or processed foods (except for quorn, which I have to eat on my diet) - we cook a lot lot more than we ever used to & feel better for it. When we eventually move & have more land, then we will go organic, grow our own veggies more, have an orchard instead of a few poxy fruit bushes in our garden, more chooks, a couple of pigs & a goat. I know some feel strongly about this regardless of budget but some simply don't, and as they see it there are bigger things for them to worry about. . I agree with this statement .... to a point...... I also have a problem with those who make choices - which we are all entitled to do of course - which include putting fags, booze, nights out, running a car, buying the latest computers and games and feeding pets well up on the list, before feeding their families properly. No-one in this country has to live on a really dreadful income - the so-called bread line is a decent amount if handled properly and appropriate choices are made. I'm well aware that I may upset others with this view but I have had to do this and will stand by what I've said. Changing the attitudes of those who automatically say "but I can't afford it" without really looking at their lifestyle will be the hardest part. I stand open mouthed at check outs observing shoppers with their designer wear....and designerwear clad infants in state of the art buggies, and their top of the range mobile phones etc, and their trolley is full of booze and "value" food, claggy white loaves and crisps, "value" cola "celebrity" magazines etc and I could weep. They wonder why their children are badly behaved and ill......and blame "the government"! They have made their choice.....which they are entitled to do......but why opt for ill health and ill treatment of animals just to project an image. Drop the "celebrity" mag and buy a chicken which has been properly raised, and feed your family for three nights off it.....plus make stock or soup from the bones! We had it roasted for supper on Sunday & the lucky cat had a bowl of s"Ooops, word censored!"s from it too. Yesterday I took off the remaining white meat (there was a whole breast left over),made a stock from the carcuss & turned this into a wonderful chicken casserole with swede,carrot,celery & potatoe,the chopped breast & thyme dumplings. It was DELICIOUS, the children ate it all,the Husband had thirds I don't always do casserole - I might do a curry or sweet & sour,or a risotto..........but there is always at least 2 meals from a free range chicken as there is so much more meat on them & it has so much more flavour! Have bought one, I think, since getting the girls. Still feel funny about it! However, I picked it clean and then made a beautiful stock and chicken noodle soup. Nothing was wasted. I think the people that buy cheap '2 for a fiver' birds would just eat the breast and maybe legs. Helly Welly Posted January 8, 2008 Share Posted January 8, 2008 I buy organic free range chicken, and yes it is expensive but i try not to eat meat more than three times a week, that way it becomes affordable. I got four meals out of the last one and they were all filling and delicious. I read a quote from someone regarding free range eggs who said that it was just a con by sellers to get you to pay more for eggs I understand when people say you should have a choice and be able to make an informed decision but i don't think there should be a choice on whethrer to buy "battery meat" or free range. If we all could only buy free range then surely the price would come down a bit. The price of food has got too low anyway, which is why people no longer place any value on the food and are happy to eat fast food garbage and cheap, uncared for meat. Don't get me wrong, I would want everyone to buy free-range compassionately farmed animal products, and I do agree that it is good value for consumers' money.
