Guest
It's all kicking off now - new EU report on the banning of conventional cages: enriched cages aren't much batter than battery cages, this is the only pic of an enriched cage i could find. Not great is it?
The Dogmother
No, I totally agree Poet, it's almost as bad but it's step in the right direction. The campaign is really gathering pace now and people will have to sit up and take notice. It will be interesting to see whether the supermarkets, who wouldn't give Hugh the time of day will now be in touch with him.
bronze
If those crocs were real - & they looked real to me - you would think they could afford the occasional free range chicken You know Cinnamon that is exactly what I thought "oh I can't afford better chicken - I'm a single parent" Yeah with expensive shoes for yourself! Not wishing to offend anyone but it's typical "council estate syndrome" When Sky first came out you always knew you were in a council estate because there were more Sky dishes! Money can be found for the things wanted - just not when someone suggests a real improvement. And the fags she had ticked into her top... Don't get me started on that one We're on a tight budget, but always buy freerange meat - just less of it and use our imaginations when cooking to make it go further. No Sky or expensive gadgets in this house Another of my wittering on comments to DH. "Well Clare On omlet is a single parent and she manages!" We might be a two parent family but we live on one (not amazing) income (all 5 of us) and we also manage. I just don't know the last time we had chicken! The Dogmother
I'm glad that you're thrifty too Bron - I hate waste of any sort. Phil pointed out (slightly cruelly) that a few of the people on that programme could do with eating a little less and that perhaps their grocery bill would go down if they did. bronze
I like your Phil I do. I must have said at the tv a few times 'how come you're so fat then' so he wasnt the only one who thought it. I've just realised how much I do talk during programs and why it must wind dh up. We're not th only ones I just read this on the RCforum It's funny how some of the "hard up" people on the council estate have enough money to become obese! I just don't know the last time we had chicken! It's the same with us - in fact, we still manage better now than we did 11 years ago, when we had a double income and no children, because we have become increasingly aware of the money we spend and the environment around us. The thing that annoyed me about the town people with the allotment was their insistence that Hugh pay for EVERYTHING, including a wee shed for their straw. How many of them was there? If they stuck a tenner in each the could have easily afforded a shed.

Egluntyne
When I was a child chicken was a luxury item....served for Sunday lunch or Christmas dinner. May be we should revisit that idea. Unfortunately I think fast food outlets (which are as guilty as the undecerning customer) is here to stay and the likes of KFC are not likely to go for free range chicken.....and their customers are unlikely to be bothered enough to demand it. The Dogmother
Hopefully, thought, the sort of people who eat at these places will drop in number. There will stil alawyas be a hard core, I suspect, but the sheer numbers might well drop over time.
Egluntyne
Let's hope so. And they won't burden the NHS for long. Their coronary arteries will see to that.
chickenanne
I thought it was a great programe, but... To me, when HFW said that his chicks would got o the vet if they were ill/deformed I was a bit annoyed - if he had day-old-chicks with defective joints as a result of a birth defect, then no vet would suggest keeping them alive - IMO it is kindest to humanely despatch them in that situation. There didn't seem to be many with defects - not an unreasonabe % anyhow. I'm sure this will change as they put on more weight than their legs can support. Given that it's HFW project and he's not exactly hard up, and the costs will be tax deductable for him, of course he should be buying the shed for the allotment. They're not looking for anything excessive, it's not like they're asking for a hot-tub or something; a small shed to keep the chicken bedding/feed dry and secure. I was amazed by his attitude to the request for the shed.
chelsea
There didn't seem to be many with defects - not an unreasonabe % anyhow.. My dad manages a chicken hatchery, the little chicks are screened at the hatchery before being taken to the farm. When hatched you can quite often get deformed chicks with crossed beaks (so unable to eat), 3 legs or twisted necks so they dont let them go to the farm. The Dogmother
I didn't think that his attitude to the shed request was incredulous, the way I read it, he was getting it into proportion with the other herculean task he had in hand. I guess that a shed seemed small fry to him with everything else going on.

To me it came across as Hugh quite rightly asking the allotment people to take some responsibility for the hens they were looking after,by buying a shed that they deemed necessary. to be honest a nice strong lockable box would do for the feed anyhow
Christian
IMHO I think he was more stressed about another thing to do, rather than the cost of the shed. I bet Channel 4 are paying all the costs anyway. I, too, thought that a couple of the 'helpers' could afford to lose a little weight! Cinnamon
Its the 'eat cheaply, eat badly' syndrome, isn't it? I eat well in my opinion, but I am sure I will be a strain on the NHS one day too
The Dogmother
There was an interesting statistic on the BBC news on the wireless this morning... being half asleep, I managed to forget the stats, but we can prolong our lives significantly by: Exercising regularly Eating our 5 a day portions of fruit and veg Stopping drinking Stopping smoking new year resolutions anyone? Cinnamon
Well,I don;smoke & I eat lots of veg. 2 out of 4 isn't bad,is it? I truly believe that if I give up my nightly G&T I will die early of stress & sheer misery anyhow
Guest
I would be interested to know if this project is still going after Hugh and the team have gone (not sure when it was filmed) and also how they decide how many eggs they have and who gets the chickens that are the 'dinners'

Tessa the Duchess
I truly believe that if I give up my nightly G&T I will die early of stress & sheer misery anyhow I read an article quite recently written by a GP saying that if everybody who drinks and smokes gave up the Rx's for tranquillizers and admissions to mental health hospitals would go through the roof Enjoy your drink Cinnamon...cheers Tessa

myles
We only eat our home reared chicken and I must say we do our upmost to make sure the birds have as good a qualilty life with as much access to lots of grass and outside space as is possible in their short 12/14 weeks ish life span. They travel no more than forty feet egg to table. I also make a point of giving them plenty of strokes and fuss. Sadly I feel that alot of people still would rather eat cheap food, I find most just don't understand why we pay more and do all the " dirty" work ourselves Anne
The Dogmother
A bit like that woman on the programme last night who had no idea what freerange was and didn't seem to want to know either.
