Charlottechicken
I am very good with money I used to write evrything down I am not so strict now but I never buy things unless I need them I don't deny myself I am just not terribly materialistic I have never been overdrawn in my life Ditto to all the above! I don't do loans except mortgages, and taking one out made me ill for a few months Best thing I have is the credit card I use to pay as many bills as possible with has a points scheme, so I get vouchers at the end of the year which can be used for buying presents for free! The card gets paid off at the end of every month. I would also agree with the spreadsheet idea too, although mine is a table in Word, with all incomings and outgoings written down as annual, monthly and weekly amounts, so you know exacly how much things are costing. Direct debit for energy is good as paying the same amount each month is helpful.
chelsea
When I am feeling this way I think about how much I do have in the global scale, & realise I am very rich indeed. I have a centrally heated, double glazed home, running clean water, plenty of food, a car, clothes- in other words I have shelter, food & warmth-things that are necessary to make my life comfortable. I completely agree, whenever im feeling down I think about people who have less than me and they never complain, I will never forget that really traumatic documentary on Bulgaria's forgotten children ....really puts things into perspective and realise how lucky we are. Christian
I haven't been overdrawn for years, but due to illness last year (8 weeks off work=no allowances) and OH having 5 months off due to op, we are a wee bit skint at the moment. Not to mention new roof, damp in the landing due to roof leaking etc etc etc, it never ends! We will get by as always, just a bad time of year. little chickadee
I know what that's like Christian! Although I was lucky to be a public sector employee when I fell ill, the money eventually ran out and it was pretty scary until OH finished his degree and got a proper job! Hope things keep on the up for you in the future
Shirl
The OH and I are rubbish with money. We really don't have a clue what is in the accounts. I do check the bank statements every month though. Our credit cards are paid off in full every month and earn a few hundred pounds of cash back every year. If we did have to be careful with money then we would have a tighter rein on the finances. Well actually I would because the OH is hopeless with money and I was once quite good and have fallen under his bad influence
The Dogmother
*hands up* Me! We have to be really careful and thrifty so that Rosie and I can afford to stay in our house. I hate worrying about the money, and I try not to, but just be really careful all the time.
Lailapet
I used to be really bad with money and ended up in a dreadful mess in England. I was lucky to be able to make a new start and so far I have not been doing too badly. I have a "budget account" in the bank where a certain amount is put in every month and all my regular expenses are paid out of that account. I do have a savings account and although there is nothing in that account at this precise moment it is where the money from my teaching will go... There is only me to be blamed for unwise decisions in the past - like ordering an eglu all the way from the UK and such, but hey, what's the point of living without the occasional bit of fun? Chicken Licken
I'm not brilliant. I changed job for better quality of life, but took a cut in pay at the same time as moving to a more expensive area and increasing my mortgage by a third. I used to always have money left at the end of the month - that is a thing of the past!! As a result whilst I have enough to get by there is not much left over. If i'm having a bad few months - lots of car bills for examples then I revert to the notebook next to the bed and account for every penny. It just makes me more careful - even being lazy and buying a sandwich at work adds up over the course of the week. Last year I started doing exam marking and will do it again this year - it just allows a little bit of a treat in the summer
theherd123
Moneysupermarket is one of the best websites out there for helping you save money and i swear by using it We are just in the process of changing quite a few suppliers for various things ranging from gas & electricity to TV, phone and broadband. We are currently with Virgin for the TV etc and im going to call them stating i can get a better deal with SKY (which i can) and i want them to match the offer - they usually do this so i will hopefully get my bill lowered without the hassle of changing

ubereglu
Well this year I'm trying to keep track of my finances, (even though it's just spending, income from odd purchases from my website and pocket money etc.) I'm trying to spend less money and at least pay money in once a month to the bank. So far this year it's been ok and I've written down everything I've spent!!!
