NClaire
I have just chased not one, not two but THREE foxes out of our garden! They can't get to the hens fortunately, but they don't like them!!! I've seen them in pairs before, but never a trio!
harveypup
Oh my word, maybe it was a mum and her cubs?
urbanchick
I saw a total of 15 once. Our old house overlooked a local car park next to woodland and there they were, running around and chasing each other, adults and babies. They were there for about half an hour. It was quite a sight. Needless to say I did not own chickens at that point! Thank goodness your hens are secure.
Olly
THREE in one garden is a lot! They must be a family, surely - foxes don't usually live in 'packs', do they?
Beauty-Box
My mother-in-law had a fox and her three cubs living in their shed. The cubs came out every night to play on the lawn, they were lovely to watch!
Chicken Licken
My auntie used to have a den of foxes under her chicken coop - the chickens always came off worst and in the end she gave up chicken keeping - they had red mites too - Iremember itching as a child Grrr
nursechick
Just as it was getting dark tonight and before the girls had put themselves to bed they started making a terrible row;we rushed out to see 2 foxes standing on the roof of the shed!.Also I've noticed scratch marks on the eglu. We only got the chickens a week ago so I suppose this is the start of a never ending battle. Ivy Mavis
Olly
Afraid so, nursechick - a search on here will bring up various suggestions for fox-fighting, such as getting any men in the family to wee around the garden! You can get a Foxwatch (sonic deterrent), and that's definitely kept the fox out of my garden.
Ain't Nobody Here
Gosh, what a fright you must've both had . At least no harm was done and you know what precautions you have to take now .
MedusA
What a lucky escape! At least you now know what you are up against. Extreme vigilance is the only course of action. Everything else is just a deterrant. I found out too late when we lost one of our girls last autumn.
Egluntyne
Extreme vigilance is the only course of action. Everything else is just a deterrant. That is it in a nutshell I'm afraid. Thank goodness the girls were safe!
NClaire
I was really surprised to see 3 in one go! I think it may have been 3 'teenage' foxes - they seemed young, but not cubs. I agree about 'constant vigilance' - the foxes are so brazen in our area that I worry that they might start coming in even when I'm in the garden. We shoot them with hosepipes when we can to try and discourage them! Fortunately our run (so far) has proved completely fox proof, and the chickens are actually getting used to the foxes!!! You can get a Foxwatch (sonic deterrent), and that's definitely kept the fox out of my garden. I heartily second all of that - particularly the Foxwatch, especially if you have it on mains power. Our area is saturated in foxes, but we haven't had one actually in the garden since Foxwatch. They are not cheap, but are worth their weight in gold.
