Which breed lays the biggest eggs?

Recommended Posts

We looked after three chooks for christmas, one of which laid the most enormous eggs! We think it was the white one, and I think she might have been a leghorn variant, as her tail stuck up in the air a lot. Anyway, we lost a few recently (one to the freezer  ), and my husband decided that he would like a chicken for his birthday. So he's getting two. Because I say so. And I'd like to get chooks which lay big eggs, because he really enjoyed the tennis ball sized eggs we had over christmas.

Now I think that a lot of people say that White stars lay big eggs, and also amber stars. Our Amber comet doesn't, so we weren't going to get another one of those, but I wondered what other hybrids people had that laid big eggs?

Yup white stars! amber stars even though they have a similar name are very different.

Amber stars and leg horns are what your discribing, excellent layers of big white eggs, My Dippy has liad every day all bar 1 in 3 weeks and a couple of double yokers as well. Even though she has just started laying her eggs are 58g each right from the start even though she is tiny.

However generally they are pretty noisy and are quite aloof so dont like handling that much. Although mine is pretty friendly.

I think you've done a typo cat. She means that White Stars and leghorns lay white eggs, NOT Amber stars (plain brown eggs from them)

We have 2 speckledy's. Mabel lays a reasonable 66g avergage, but Betty [or BIg Bet as we like to call her] lays an avergage 80g. She used to lay bigger eggs before she was ill last Easter, coming in at a regular 88g.

They are both pretty reliable too - we get around 12-14 eggs per week from the 2 chooks each week in summer, and around 10 per week during the winter.

No complaints from me. :D

Smartie my leghorn lays white whoppers!!! She has the most incredible bright red floppy comb like a bonnet too! The shells of the eggs are so thick & solid & the yolks so very yellow. She is bossy, cheeky, pretty & fun. She does like to peck my finger for the sake of it though! :?

My magpie (hybrid) chicken also lays whopper eggs - a kind of plum blush colour. She is a stunning looking bird too.

Big Zee, my Coral lays 70g eggs most days and she's only been laying for a couple of months.

Corals are Leghorn X (possibly crossed with the White Star or similar parentage?) but don't have the flighty nature of the White Star. She's a gorgeous looking hen - very upright tail and big floppy comb.

My other two hens' eggs rarely reach 50g.

My Omlet girls (Gingernuts and Miss Pepperpot) lay large eggs but not super large - as they are only young. But when I see the medium eggs in the supermarkets it brings home to me just how tiny a medium supermarket egg is compared to what my girls are laying as standard. My Amber star hybrid lays same (if not slightly smaller) eggs than my Omlet hybrids.
