Eyren
I have got much more ethical about what a buy and where I buy it. Same here - we make a point of buying meat from our local independent butcher, as he sells good free-range stuff and isn't a big impersonal supermarket. We just have to make sure we go there after we've been to the wholefood shop, or we get filthy looks from all the vegetarians

Eyren
No surely not? Well, so my DH says. He went in there just before Christmas with a lovely reusable jute bag emblazoned with the butcher's name and logo - said bag full of nice free range duck and bacon - and got a few glares. Of course he could be exaggerating for comic effect!
Guest
i read about that in The Metro today, I would only use them as a complete last resort foodwise (not meat though, would never get meat from them!). We did buy a water butt from Tesco Direct the other day though, 100 litre one for £25 including the stand and all the bits so we thought it was a really good price. We buy our meat from a local farm and a local butcher. I just hope people have the ethics not to be seduced by this dirty trick of Tesco. There really should be an ombudsman for supermarkets, they get away with murder, literally!
Ain't Nobody Here
I haven't set foot in a Tesco since Hugh and Jamie's programmes went out. I shop mainly at Waitrose (expensive but you do get good quality) or Sainsburys. I'm going to try out a veg/fruit box delivery from next week and am thinking about finding a butcher that delivers (I'll have to buy a freezer though ). Still managing my "packaging-free" snacks regime - haven't bought a Cadburys mini-roll, multi-pack of crisps or a Muller corner yogurt for ages. Also baking much more. The boys are adapting to it although I have relented and buy a few Kitkats per week ).

chelsea
I havent shopped at Tesco for a year. I was a regular internet grocery shopper with my delivery every friday. I found the quality of the food got worse and worse and they sent a lot of stuff with just a 2/3 day use by date which was really annoying. Have been using Sainsburys for a year, love them. They are dearer - but I love the quality. I hate shopping of any kind and do all mine online. Also our Sainsbury's is a 40 mile round trip so having it delivered for a fiver is a bargain. One Man Banned
I know it's been said but I think it is more of a case of Tesco's having to clear out the supplies they already have, and it must mean that they aren't selling so they've had to cut the price - I'd hope that while they may be out of stock with free range chicken, people just aren't opting for the cheap chicken - that has to be a good thing I can't stand our local Tesco's and we get our weekly shop from Waitrose instead. Tesco's is there as an emergency outlet only at the moment. A Xx

Ain't Nobody Here
Interesting articles. It's obvious, as ever, reading some of the comments, that plenty of people just don't care about the welfare of the animals they eat. It's all about money for them, with the usual bleating "I'm on a low income". Surely you can still make choices about what you buy even if you're on a low income. Rant over - I feel better now . Yorkshire Pudding
Hear, hear! Everonye has choices about food, it's a question of priorities. We thought we would have been spending more on food because we were being far more selective about sourcing and welfare over the last few years. When we worked it out, taking into account inflation and two growing lads eating us out of house and home , the spending hasn't really gone up. FORENSICA
I shop only at Tesco. The reason is that it is really close to us. However, I only buy free range chicken, and other meat organic. It is more expensive, but we don't eat meat every day and so to spend aprox. £6 a week for a quality meat is not that much. I think that people on low income are just plainly ignorant and stick to rubbish arguments for not caring about the animal welfare. They could eat plenty of veg and meat only occasionally. That would certainly be more healthy and better for their waist line anyway. If "Ooops, word censored!"ody buys the cheep poor sad chickens then they will not produce them. I would not blame Tesco, since they just simply provide an answer to customers' demands.
Eyren
I reckon Tesco are just trying to put a customer-friendly spin on an embarrassing situation, which is that no-one wants their battery chickens any more and they have to shift it quick before it goes off! If it's just a temporary measure and a few pensioners get to have a cheap roast as a result, that's fine by me - as others have said, better than throwing it away - but if it turns out to be a permanent price drop, then they deserve censure.
