Dodge
I hate Tesco's and will not be shopping in there again! They have cut the price of whole chickens to less than £2-00. They have reduced standard whole birds from £3-30 to £1-99 This is a huge slap in the face for all the hard work that has been done, to try and promote the British public's awareness of how cheap chicken is produced. As a result of this action by Tesco's, there is now going to be even more people looking for "cheap chicken" and we all know that an increase in demand, means that the poultry industry will now have taken one step forwards and two steps back. I see this action from a company who is striving for world dominance, as totally unacceptable. The only way that we can try and reverse this is by standing up to be counted, and refuse to give Tesco’s our custom. Compassion in World Farming and the RSPCA have criticised Tesco’s and have said that people should ask supermarkets to stock welfare-friendly chickens. Cinnamon
While Yes,I do think it is a good idea not to shop at Tesco & I would prefer not to,I cannot afford to shop in Waitrose (the only alternative for me) 100% of the time. Nor can I get to Waitrose as easily as I can my local Tesco. So much as I would love to boycott them,it just isn't practical for me. I have however started doing my major shops at Waitrose & am keeping Tesco for emergencys or day by day shhopping.
Boris70
I haven't done a major shop at tescos since Leo was born at the beginning of November. I got fed up with the produce being rubbish etc. I am in the very lucky position of having Sainsburys, Waitrose, M&S food and Morrisons within 5 miles of each other - so can pick and choose. However, Tescos I must give credit for - they actually had the most selection of free range chicken - I resorted to them after not being able to buy it at 3 of the above 9I have written to complain but no responce as yet!). Even more shocking - the price for 2 skin on breasts was only 80p dearer per kilo than the really cheap horrible looking breasts - so I cleared the shelves to stock my feezer! Mrs Webmuppet
Sadly I have to shop in Tescos, the nearest alternative is a far way from us. I am quite fussy about what I buy there though...drives the OH nuts as I check everything I buy.........I spent to much time in France in my youth where its the norm to examine what you are buying before sticking it in the trolly. I do get some funny looks when I prod and poke the fruit and veggies ( dont want any thats to hard or too squidgey). As for chicken always free range or organic, the other stuff is tasteless. Egluntyne
I reckon they are flogging off stuff from old suppliers and will introduce a new line of free range stuff.....at a ridiculous price. Both ways....they win! I don't buy food there now. I do like their "Natural" range of cleaning products. The dishwasher tabs are the best eco friendly ones I've used. chickencam
We go to Tesco occasionally for clothes and cheap cd's because they are about the cheapest place the kids can buy them from with their pocket money but i prefer to use play.com. We also buy our printer cartridges from there. We generally avoid meat there and shop at waitrose by preference.
Laura & CTB
I have a Tesco and Sainsbury's both equal distance from me - I never go to Tesco's.
moochoo
I have until recently shopped at Tescos, mainly because it's open 24 hours and OH has a shopping phobia I work wierd hours and to be honest it was out of pure convienience. The past couple of weeks I have used Ocado, Waitroses' home delivery company and I have to say it has been excellent. They've arrived when they said they would, the food has been chosen and packed with care and all with good best before dates. They even recycle their own plastic bags. On a weeks shop the cost has been comparable with Tescos, which was my biggest concen so on the whole I'm very pleased with the change. Paola
I think there would be more benefit in shopping for the right things thats the only way to change a retailer! I agree My local supermarket is two miles away and is Tesco It is not practical for me to shop anywhere else because it they are much further away and i would have to pass Tesco to get there However they usually have a fantastic selection of free range chicken
Dodge
Ocado are fantastic, we do a weekly shop on line, and as well as being good value, they always deliver on time. However if there is any problems, the driver always calls us at home and advises us what time he will be with us. He usually calls us and asks if he can come round 1/2 an hour early!! Also because Ocado use a giant warehouse for their deliverys instead of the local Waitrose store, then we hardly ever not get what we ordered. Over the years we have tried most of the supermarket home delivery services, and Ocado is head and shoulders above them all. Eyren
I'd like to stop shopping at Tesco, but since I live only half a mile from one and walk past it on my way home from work, it's the most convenient and "green" way for me to buy odds and ends of fresh stuff like milk. However between the organic veg box, home-made bread and of course the girls' contribution of eggs, we can mostly get away with a weekly shop at Sainsbury's or Waitrose. I'll have to look into shopping online at Waitrose - they are on the far side of Cambridge from us, plus actually going there makes it is too tempting to impulse-buy goodies, which is the main reason it works out expensive. Many years ago they were my only local supermarket, but their fresh unprocessed food was cheap enough for us to afford, even on a limited budget. Guest
To be fair to Tesco (why am I always sticking up for that god-forsaken place??! ), the reason is probably because the stock they are selling just now will have already been in the system when the Channel 4 programmes were broadcast, so they will have to sell through the cheap chickens, while waiting on increased stock levels of free-range hitting the shelf. If the bog-standard chicken was still selling well, they wouldn;t be dropping the price.....
jomaxsmith
I'm kind of stuck in that I use Tesco clubcard deals for so many things to make my life nicer and save me money (days out, service and MOT for the car, RAC membership etc) but I hate what I stand for. At the moment, I'm using Rivernene organic veg box supplemented by the farm shop and Asda (spit - even worse than Tesco!) or Sainsburys, the butcher for meat and Ocado for home delivery. I haven't done a big shop at Tesco in ages but the one near us is a mega one where you can buy everything so it is very convenient. I'm lucky that I'm a full time mum so I've got the time available to shop in lots of places. Jo
AmandaR
I'm inclined to agree with Chookiehen. They will need to reduce the price to get it off their shelves if it is not selling. When I was in Waitrose last Thursday, all of their Select chicken was reduced too from whole birds to thighs - every piece on the shelves. There has obviously been an impact in the way people are thinking and buying the chicken that they eat and I think this is just a 'changeover' period for the supermarkets. Blackrocksrock
I also think there will not be a lot of free range chickens yet as the producers will have to crank up the stocks since they will just have had normal orders - not like now when all the world is looking for a free range chicken - think of it taking 100 days compared to 39 days for the others. I reckon too their stocks are from booking stock ahead and will deplete shortly and then we will see the free range ones taking over. I hope this is the case anyway. I think there has been a huge upsurge of people wanting to buy free range, leaving a lot of standard birds in the food chain. It's better for them to be sold cheap than to be wasted. It does take time to secure stock for free-range birds and it's a big change for the farmers to implement new conditions.
missuscluck
I did shop at Tesco regularly but have stopped just after Xmas. I have compleatly changed the way we shop and eat. I have bought a breadmaker and make all our bread. I already baked a lot but have upped this so we dont buy any choccy biccies any more. I make all our meals from scratch, nothing processed. Our only ready made extravagance is fish fingers and homefries when we are in a rush. I have got much more ethical about what a buy and where I buy it. I shop on the way home from work once a week for fresh stuff needed and use the butchers/greengrocers/aldi and waitrose and have started doing a once a month large shop for esentials like flour/sugar etc to Morrisons. I am thus using less fuel. I am not spending as much money as we are not buying ready made stuff. Yes, it is a lot of work and I am lucky enough to knock off work at school pick up time so I have that time to cook. Boy, it feels good though. Also my kids like cooking with me. chickencam
I've just seen the chickens in Tesco (I went for Carrs breadmaker flour and it is the only place locally that sells it) and I think it is probably as has been said that they are struggling to get rid of the volume that had been ordered from the prducers before the programmes. I do wonder how much warning was given to free range producer to up their production and how much they were prepared to take a gamble on doing so, but if the supply of free range isn't there and the supply of even cheaper standard is it is not good news for the campaign, because once people go back to their old ways it will be even harder to change then back again
Guest
I would imagine that the free-range supplier would have been given a heads-up from either H F-W, or JO well in advance about this, as will the broiler suppliers. I do, however, think that the supermarkets under-estimated the effect this would have on Joe Public, which means that it will take time for the stock control systems to compensate for the different selling patterns. (I used to work in stock control for Tesco, by the way.....)
CatsCube
Arghh, just as I was going to swap from Asda to Tesco, and they are both bloomin' rubbish. I wich I could just get all my shopping in the same place. Its going to be a real pain going round so many shops to get everything each week. I wish I had a big co-op near me, then I would be happy as I could shop cheaply and ethically as it seems everywhere else is one or the other.
