bellekatz
Got home from school today to find that someonehas been using my credit card fraudulently Its a card I dont ever use, but they had my name address and birth date as well. The card has been cancelled and I am not liable for anything but I wonder what else they know.............. I must admit to being freaked out by this......... Mrs Frugal
I had the same thing with my Switch card last year. The bank gave me back the £1000 that someone had managed to spend at William Hill Online and we've had no problems since. Good luck with yours. It is scary, isn't it but if you have cut up the card and alerted the bank, at least you will get your money back.
bellekatz
Ive cut it up - whats the best way of disposing of it?
Mrs Frugal
That's what my bank told me to do. I cut mine into tiny pieces and threw it in the bin. Once it's cut up and the bank are aware that it's been used fraudulently, you don't need to do anything else, I think. If it's the same system with your bank as it was with mine, I had to fill out a claim form and I had my money reimbursed within a fortnight. bronze
I tend to divide mine into two random piles and put each pile in the rubbish indifferent places.
Tessa the Duchess
Ooh it is scary isn't it, poor you Somebody intercepted my credit card cheques in the post a couple of years ago and spent over £3000 on clothes and furs Took quite a few phone calls to get it sorted Maybe you should ask your bank for advice. little chickadee
Oooh - scary . Glad you found out about it. I had someone use mine when I was a student, but I already knew it had been stolen and had notified the bank. Make sure it's cut up really small, and if you're worried about disposing of it all together, put the bits in seperate bin bags
Ain't Nobody Here
That happened to me a couple of years ago . Someone in London spent increasing amounts each time on on-line betting. Total came to nearly £2,000 . Got it all back but it's not a nice feeling .
Tiggy
my OH had his blocked by the bank when we were on holiday, someone in UK had just brought £1000s worth of computor equipment on it & took it to its limit - it took lots of calls to sort it out
bellekatz
I have to say a big THANK YOU to Currys who picked up on it when they couldnt get confirmation on a laptop purchase. I think there has only been 3 things in the last few days and the bank has already said that I wont have to pay anything. THey are sending me new cards. What I cant get is that I never use it - it sits in a wallet at home and hasnt been out since November - thats why I knew straight away it wasnt my purchase what else it scarey is that they not only have my name and address but my date of birth as well... Tessa the Duchess
My credit card company always phone me if there is any unusual activity on my account. When I bought my laptop they were on the phone within the hour asking me what I had bought on credit that day. A good service. Tessa
Guest
on the downside - re them finding unusual purchases. When I went to New York last year I called my main card provider and told them I would be going and spending. I was very pleased to hear that there was even a special bonus points offer on on foriegn transactions. When I got there it was refused from purchase 1. I had to call them from the hotel - at HUGE expense (yes they accept reverse charge calls - but I couldn't get through that way!). Then they told me I had wasted my time calling before hand as they don't accept previous calls as proof or some such nonsense. If I have to call ship to shore this summer I will make the hugest fuss ever.
hillfamily
a friend of mine had the same prob when she went to SOuth Africa (at short notice as her mother had died) Her card had a stop put on it - she wasn't happy ........if the bank had phoned home they would have spoken to her hubby who would have confirmed she was in SA I've had my card used before - luckily my bank phoned to see if it was me and they put a stop on the card immediately
Egluntyne
This happened to my daughter a couple of years ago. We were well able to prove that she was in hospital in Sheffield whilst the purchases were made in Newcastle! All very inconvenient and upsetting all the same. Olly
sorry to hear that Bellekatz - it's a horrible feeling, isn't it. They have probably never seen the actual card, they have just got your details from somewhere that it was used. On the whole, while it is annoying to have a card stopped, I'd rather my bank did that if something unusual happens, than let it go on. A tip - it might be worth applying for a copy of your credit record from Experian, it only costs a couple of quid (don't sign up to their regular report thing, just get a one-off). This will show if any other applications have been made in your name for anything.
Paola
How shocking. I always worry about something like that Glad it has been stopped. Its enough to make you really paranoid
bellekatz
Thanks Olly I will do that this weekend. OH reckons that as they have my dob as well it must have come off a database somewhere as they couldnt get that from any credit card slips and statements ( of which there arent any anyway as I dont use it!)
