Jeanne
This is probably the daftest question any of you will ever be asked. I am getting 2 cream legbars in May sometime. They will be about 8 weeks old. I know I cant put them in with my big chooks, and I plan to either convert a rabbit hutch or buy a big plastic bike shed thingy and convert that. Here is the question I have an aviary made of aluminium. I have had budgies in it but all but one has died over bonfire nights noise. I still have 2 quail in there (the titchy chinese painted ones. I will take the budgie out and put her in one of the numerous cages I have around the place.) Can I put the new chicks in with them to keep them safe from the girls? I can always make them a cage out of some wire if I can`t (the quail that is not the chickens) Here is a picture of the aviary. I can make the size of it 9ft x 6ft as it has 2 inner panels that I wouldn`t need for hens. Does that seem like a fair size?
Bondinho
Most people say chickens will attack quail, we all know that chickens have to have a pecking order and I don't think quail would hold up too well to an angry chicken So I don't think it would work I'm afraid
Egluntyne
I agree I'm afraid.
The Dogmother
Yup, chickens will attack and kill quail. They are often used as ground foraging birds in aviaries to clear up spilled seed, but they're no good with chooks. Dilly posts on here often and has her quail in a lovelyhouse, see here: http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18939
Jeanne
I knew it was a daft idea as soon as I posted it. How would I let the chickens out to free range, the quail would follow. That is a very superiour quail house. I think those are bigger birds than mine. Mine are about as big as a budgie. I am sure I can make them something, they have spent the winter outside with no harm. I need a male for them as they don`t lay without one, well mine haven`t, but they did lay 2 fertile eggs the day I got them.
Snowy
Maybe you could section the quail off into a smaller area temporarily. The chooks will only be in there until they are big enough to integrate with the others won't they? It would be ideal for them in the meantime and as long as the quail are protected
Jeanne
I think I can make something for the quail Snowy. I have a partially costructed chinchilla cage here ( I gave up on it after scratching myself half to death) I am sure I can finish it off for 2 little birdies. bronze
Sounds liek you may have chinese painted quail. the cage sounds a good temporary measure until the chicks move in with th ebig ones
Mirkwood
I have Japanese quail and i know i wouldn't put them with my isa browns, i had thought about it but seeing them now no, the quail would be dead with one peck.
Jeanne
They are chinese painted. Don`t worry. I have come to my senses and won`t be putting them with flipping big chicks. I have no idea what planet I am on half the time!
Willow
Hi Jeanne, I'm glad you did post as my youngest expressed an interest in keeping quail and I'd missed Dilly's post and her delightful little bird house. It has inspired me to order Katies Thear's book and look into it properly ! Patricia
