Karen & co.
I was wondering if any one could recommend any of these My son has asked for one for his Birthday, but there are hundreds I've heard some are easier to use than others regarding loading songs etc. and all the different dockng systems too I tried looking on the Which? website last night, but there's nothing better than a recommendation from people you 'know' Karen x
moochoo
I've got an apple ipod and I love it. It plays videos, music and stores photos. I've had a generic mp3 before but it was so hard to use. The ipod is simple to use and to upload to. I prefer to use the apple store to download music from too, they have a great selection and have some great features like 'complete an album' for if you have a single on your ipod you can choose to find and download the rest of the album from that artist. Olly
I love my iPod and have had no problems setting up iTunes, downloading stuff and copying my own CDs on to it. I've never tried another, but I would strongly recommend the iPod - it's not just advertising hype, they really are wonderful.
Clash City Rocker
i-pod are the most popular and so easy to use. Modern Technology is something I'm rubbish with but even I "tamed" my i-pod reasonably quickly!!! Prices vary greatly depending on the size of the memory, but provide an option for everyone's budget, though be aware that songs bought from i-tunes cost 79 pence each. Updated software is supplied regularly and free.
Cinnamon
You won't do any better than an i-pod

Ain't Nobody Here
Just to put a spanner in the works, I bought an ipod nano for ES's christmas 2 years ago. Didn't work (and I left it till Christmas Eve to set it up ). Sent it back, a new one got sent 3 weeks later (minus the free engraving ). This worked relatively well (with fairly frequent glitches which required resetting) until it really packed in 18 months after we got it. I was tearing my hair out by the end and have vowed never to buy one again. (Although so many people have them and they're fine, I suppose I was just unlucky. However, there were so many people on the forums I looked at to try to find out what was wrong, it seemed like no-one had a working one .) Sorry, that probably doesn't help . Tessa the Duchess
Just to put a spanner in the works, I bought an ipod nano for ES's christmas 2 years ago. Snap! exact same thing happened to me. I bought eldest son an Ipod Nano two Christmas's ago, after 3 days the screen stopped working. I gather from the Apple support site it was a very common problem at the time. Sent it back, got a replacement and all is well, he uses it every day I think they have ironed out the glitches now. Tessa
craftyhunnypie
I've got an ipod nano, but to be honest I've heard the Zen MP4 players are better. It's whether or not they want to be able to say ' I've got an ipod' or not really. It's just a fashion thing. Plus you have to use itunes with ipod, with Zen you don't. Sunshine
I have a sony one which i really like. I chose it because all my friends had ipods and i wanted something different. My only problem is the program you have to use with it but now they have adapted them so you can use windows media player to upload songs now. missuscluck
We have got 4 i pods i our familly and about to get a fifth one. No problems as yet and they are easy to use for kids. Even my technophobe hubby can manage. We have bought all of ours from Amazon. Best price I could find!
chocchick
I have an ipod nano. I bought a cover for it as they get scratched so easily. The problem I had was that I didn't use it for a few months, then it wouldn't switch back on. OH took it to work and did some technical fiddling. It works fine now, and I like it generally. little chickadee
We have an ipod and an ipod nano (my daughters) itunes doesn't work properly on my computer and I'm thinking about getting a creative zen stone with speaker, to listen to my audio books on. They look really good and have good reviews. Also a lot cheaper than an ipod . The new ones also work with AAC files

Richard
I've got an ipod photo and an ipod nano. I also have a zen. the zen is, in my opinion, rubbish. Well, its not anywhere near as user friendly as the ipods. In fact it is, yes it is really hard and rubbish. Her indoors has an ipod and even she can manage to use it. She does radio 4 podcasts as well. that means it is unbelievably easy to use. Just don't let itunes take over your computer. don't let it run your filing system. itunes is the spawn of the devil. But you can't live without it. Just keep it under control, don't let it synchronise and ..., well just keep an eye on it. Its like, well it comes into your life, you can't live without it, it manages you, tells you what to do, tries to reorganise your previously well orgnanised systems. Its like a woman. And I can't live without it.
chickencam
Hubby bought me a Zen Stone Plus for mothering sunday it was only £35 in the Argos sale and it is so easy to use really good sound and tiny. The software was easy to download to. I have only loaded it from cd's which are stored on the computer so far and it has the advantage of an fm radio. You charge it from the usb socket on your pc or you can get a mains charger and it goes for about 5 hours constantly. i can be seen singing and boucing around my house in a very embarassing way most days, when I am alone

I will just have to go back and have another go at it. I also don't find the software quite as good for uploading stuff (but thats just a personal opinion). The Zen doesn't take tracks bought from itunes which is a pain - but its another example of itunes taking over your life!

Couldn't agree more... after having had this laptop for a few months now, I still haven't dared to install itunes on it, because of having to deal with it on the previous laptop, which died following a spilled drink accident which no daughter has owned up to so far (4 suspects)... and well I'm going to have to install it at some point cause I want to sort my ipod and put new stuff on it... yet I dread doing it... I love my laptop without itunes on it... Thinking I should transfer my music to OH's laptop... he probably still got itunes on there!! Now there's a thought.... off to think about it...
