Shelley Cockell
How often should I clean out my run? The chickens are confined to it two days a week but today I decided it was getting a little too mucky and cleared it out. It is not that big and was covered with bark, but I've put down straw this time - I realise that this won't last as long. Now I've read that you can get something called stalosan F for sanitising the ground - I've had a look at my two local feed suppliers today and they have nothing of the sort (mind you they don't have much other than pellets!) where can I get this - how much do I need and what should it cost? Is there anything else I can get instead? Thank you (in anticipation of some insight)
chelsea
I bought a big tub of stalosan f online. If you google it you will find several places that supply and deliver. Its a powder that sanitises the soil, useful and harmless to all livestock. When I clear out the run I sprinkle it over the soil and brush it in. I think my tub was approx £17 but it will last for ages.
toesonthenose
hi there, we use dest free wood shavings and usually change it once a month and have found that this is fine, as long as you spend 1 minute a day and pick up the worst of the poo, it can be used on ur garden or in your compost too,
BarbaraJ
\I got my stalosan online too! raked some into the aubiose at the moment as i had already put it down but when i change it i will put it on the soil
chelsea
I find stalosan is particularly good it its wet, I think it helps to keep things drier as it says you can add it to the wet litter (ie hemcore) so even if you are not cleaning out your run but you find some of the floor litter is a little damp you can sprinkle some stalosan in it. Egluntyne
I got my Stalosan F from **Regency Poultry**
Christian
Have just ordered some from my local supplier. The rain and poo and not making the run as sweet smelling as before
Olly
I use aubiose in the run, and I rake it out about every four to six weeks. When I think it's getting very grotty, probably every couple of months, I move the Eglu and run, dig it all over and add some garden lime. DW
I was thinking of getting some Stalosal F, too, but am not sure of what size to buy. I have one eglu & run with aubiose and 2 hens. How long would an 8 kg pack last me? Or should I consider getting the 25 kg size? D.
Blackrocksrock
I bought the 8kg one - it will last ages - I have 3 hens and an eglu too on bark and I also put in on the roosting bars and the poo tray under the paper.

Laura & CTB
Hard to say how long it would last you - depends how much you want to throw around I bought the 25kg box about a year ago and I'm still not a quarter through. My run is on paving slabs and is 4m x 2m - I usually just sprinkle it on the damp areas so only use a cupful each clean. Hope that helps. KimW
Would I put this down at the same time as the Garden Lime or does it do the same as Garden Lime (smell wise)?
Strepsy
I was planning to try and get some Stalosan F today but have just read on another forum that whatever you put it on won't compost? Anyone got any more info on that? If I just put it on the soil and put my easibed over it would that still affect the compostability? superjules
Would I put this down at the same time as the Garden Lime or does it do the same as Garden Lime (smell wise)? As far as I know, Stalosan is safe to use while the chickens are using the run, whereas you mustn't leave any traces of lime on the surface of the soil if your chooks are going straight back in. Correct me if I'm wrong though cos I don't have any stalosan. Terry Beebe from Practical Poultry thinks it's fab though.
Egluntyne
I always let my hens on the soil after I have sprinkled garden lime around. It is only pulverised chalk or limestone.....another source of calcium!.....it won't harm them. builders lime on the other hand, will as it is highly caustic. superjules
Thanks for that Egluntine, I have some garden lime, but when I bought it I was told I had to make sure it was all properly in the soil before letting them back on it. So is it the same stuff you've been mentioning to toughen the eggshells?
DW
Had a quick look on 'tinternet and came up with these postings from Practical Poultry forum re. Stalosan F and composting: I use Stalosan F and asked the manufacturers this very question, I was told it'll have no adverse affects on the compost heap. I use Stalosan F and compost it too. I've not had any problems with it and have been doing this for around two years. D.
Christian
Limestone flour is a powder Jules, much finer than garden lime. I have managed to get hold of some from my local horsey shop, as the stuff Egluntine sent me has run out now. (thanks Egluntine, fab stuff )
