Louise
Hi Spaced hopper this could descend into an ethical debate that won't prove anything either way but there are people in the world who revere either animals as a whole and consider them to be sacred (Jainism) and other groups who consider one particular creature to be sacred and won't destroy them even when suffering terrible disease because it is wrong to take a life. To me that is wrong I also by the same token feel it is wrong to allow one species to wipe out another in its entirety and will do what I can to stop this in fact humans have been trying to do it to humans for years in some parts of the world including Europe in the 1940's I think you will have to agree to disagree on this as we will never see things the same way
Sheilaz
Yes, there's no such thing today as a totally natural balance, mostly because of human intervention since the year dot. Which means that most "nature" is managed. We can therefore only look at the state of this as it is now, & the predicted trend, and try & find the best way of preserving what we can, and trying to find the best way of coping with and improving the state of things, given the mess we're in. Good point COAM. It's just not possible to turn the clocks back, so anything we do will be a compromise, compared to the original natual state. (Whatever, that was!) Which means that it's everchanging. Which means that we should keep an eye on the direction of those changes, or some things will be irretrievable. Cup of tea anyone? Oh, Kazaddress, you really don't want squirrels in the roof, they'll destroy everything. Won't be good for you or kind to them if they eat through an electricity cable. I dont wish to cause ructions and yes, we will probably have to agree to disagree, didnt understand the comparisons with buildings and actual living things, but i suppose some people have their priorities wrong. AnnieP
i suppose some people have their priorities wrong. I am reading this thread with real aprehension. Why do people have to have such extreme views? If you like squirrels, fine, enjoy them. If you dislike having them around, then find a way of getting rid of them, and no, I don't mean by killing them, but as humans we do have the power to change things for the perceived better. We play God every time we wake up each day, since every interaction and action we make has an effect somehow. We have to make sensible choices based on our beliefs and desires, and balance them sensibly. It is not to do with having wrong priorities, and if you are insinuating that people who hold different beliefs to you are wrong, then I am afraid you are playing "God " more than them! We all are free to believe what we want. If we took the source of this debate and stepped it up a bit, and it wasn't your garden, but your kitchen which was overrun, and with rats and not squrrels, I expect you would act differently from the line you are suggesting is only the only right one to take, which seems to be to let it be. The Managing Director
If we took the source of this debate . The source of this debate was Murdo Do not let him spread dissent among the ranks, live and let live and remember that lovely quote 'before you criticise another man walk a mile in his shoes that way you'll be a mile away and you'll have his shoes' Mind you we had squirrels (grey) in our loft and they were not welcome, all that scampering around and chewing through cables was not funny
AnnieP
remember that lovely quote 'before you criticise another man walk a mile in his shoes that way you'll be a mile away and you'll have his shoes' Do you know, I was thinking of that quote over dinner tonight! The Managing Director
Do you know, I was thinking of that quote over dinner tonight! Great minds! would you like a job there's a vacancy for a deputy assistant (the last one is banished from the forum for spreading dissent) although I think I'll have to let him back on as I think he might be able to help Cinnamon with her blog problems ,(credit where credit's due he does know a bit about computers)either way he was only ever deputy assistant in the wilder realms of fantasy
AnnieP
Thanks, but no thanks, in my experience of being Deputy in real life, I find they end up getting all the awful jobs that the big boss doesn't want! Of course, where you are concerned, this is only right and proper!
Mrs Frugal
*Puts moderator hat on* A concerned Omleteer has contacted me.... There are some pretty strongheld beliefs being posted here and there is a real danger that this could descend into an unpleasant mess. Could you calm down please and not let this happen. I appreciate that some of you do have strong opinions on this subject but I don't think this is the place for them. Well done to the MD and Annie for bringing a little light relief into what was becoming a very heavy topic . Thank you. *Takes moderator hat off again* Edited April 6, 2006 by Guest

I agree, live and let live. Like the quote too, heard it before but it still made me chuckle Sorry again, lets be friends.
