Our girls are here

Recommended Posts

After waiting quite a while for some ex-batts and giving up, we went to see a lady in hook who rears chickens (just to have a look) and after much deliberating we brought home 1 Black Rock called Tikka, 3 Isa Brown's (who were destined for the battery farm's but the farmer didn't want them) called Totty, Lucy and Lily. The Isa brown's are not laying yet (19 weeks old) but the Black Rock is due to lay soon.

They all sat on top of each other on the way home in the pet carrier and are now settled in the Eglu for the night.

We have been advised to keep them in all day tomorrow and let them into the run on Monday. This will then give them time to adjust to their new home.

So, will post picks of the lovely ladies as soon as I can.

typical.... Got home and took a phone call from BHWT saying they could allocate three hens for Surry's recuse next weekend. DOH!.

Hi Sarah

Congratulations on your new girls! I'm sure you will have lots of fun over the bank holiday with their antics!

I am researching breeders in the area as get my cube in 4 weeks but wasn't aware there was anyone in Hook (aout 5 mins away from me) would you mind giving me contact details if poss and what breeds they have?

I am having a nightmare choosing so somewhere close by would be really helpful to check out! :D

Well the chickens have been here a night now but boy are they noisy this morning. They are shouting to get out of the Eglu.

The lady I got them from advised me to keep them in till tomorrow morning but I not not sure I can with all the noise also we want to see them!

Any advice please?

My girlies came from Hook Farm and the owner (Alison) only has Hybrids in stock at the moment and has around 20 left.

Her number is 07833792920 and I paid £18 each for the 4, her normal

price is £19.

Alison was very professional and spent time with us explaining each variety of hybrid she had. Alison gave me information to take away and told me

to ring her anytime if I had any questions.

Where is the best place to buy all my bits for the birds? Should I go to Scatts @ Basingstoke?

Thanks Guys

I'm sure they can come out of the eglu, and stay in the eglu and run part with access to the eglu it's self :?

My friend was given this information, but I think it's because the breeder thought that the coop didn't have an attatched run :?

Have fun watching their antics

If I am reading this correctly you are keeping them in the Eglu house??

You must let them into the run, they need to eat and drink. I think the lady

meant not to let them freerange, not keep them shut up in the Eglu itself.

I've had my girls for a month (from Omlet) and hadn't heard about keeping them in the eglu all day. :? They need to come out or they'll get nothing to eat or drink. Omlet recommends that you keep them in the run for 5 days before free ranging so they know where 'home' is. Personally I would let them into the run and they should know where the eglu is at bedtime.

PS be warned...when you let them out you will get nothing done! Chicken watching is very addictive! :D

I shouldn't think it would hurt if you let them out into the run.

The breeder I got mine from said to shut them in the house when I got them home, but that was just overnight - not all day! Plus they were only young 8 - 10 weeks old. I should imagine 4 fully grown chickens would make a lot of noise!!

The reason they say to shut them in the house is so that they know where to roost. But if you let them out the worst that can happen is that they may not know to go back in tonight. So just leave a torch in the nest box and they will be drawn to the light.

Let them out!! :D:D:D

HI Sarah

Thanks for the info.. I'll give her a call next week! I can recommend Scats Basingstoke as been checking their product range and prices myself already..

As a guide they have the following..

Layers pellets 20kg £6.55

Mixed Corn 20kg £6.55 or 10kg £3.50

Poultry spice think was 3.60ish

Grit - several sizes but approx £2.50 for 2.5kg

Verm X - can't recall price but similar to other places..

Red mite powder £7.99 (although I found diatoms cheaper)

all the usual drinkers/feeders etc.. good price

Pets at Home Basingstoke also do Dodson & Horrell Layers pellers 6.39 but nothing else..

Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone.

The've never been on grass before so have had a great time picking at it and s"Ooops, word censored!"ing their feet on it. They found the grub box around an hour ago and BOY they can eat. Maybe I have put too much food in it?

Off to Scats ourselves soon to stock up on extras and spend more money!

Can't wait for them to settle in and see their characters emerge (and maybe an egg or two)

Hello Egg Lou

Just returned from SCATS with Red Mite Powder, Corn and Poultry Spice. Could not find the Garlic and Limestone, but did not think to look in the Horsey aisle  Thank you for the advice.

They did not have any layers Mash left, so I will have to have another think where I can find that near to me.

Off to clear out the shed so I can put the feed somewhere.

Enjoy your day

The time will hopefully fly by for you until your girls arrive. I cannot believe that this time next week, we will have our chooks and cube :dance::dance:

I went to Scat's this afternoon and was really disappointed with what little they had.

I did manage to get some pellets and Grit but the Mite Powder, Poultry Spice and verm- X seemed very over priced so didn't pick them up.

I have been advised to try Ascott @ www.ascott.biz as they stock a variety of items and are very reasonably priced.

I must say that a quick look on the web site has proved this to be the case.

www.wigglywigglers.co.uk is also worth a look. I bought my layers mash there with Bokashi already mixed in and my mixed corn prior to getting the chickens.

So the trip to Scats may have been not to my liking but the trip to Festival Place for some retail T after was just GREAT! - Money spent on me £0

Spent on my eldest daughter £80 hmmmmmmmm.

Sounds like you had a good trip anyway then.. even if it wasn't for your chooks!

The feed at Scats is very well priced and can't find anywhere to beat the grit but I didn't get mite powder or wormer as decided to try diatoms for all control as does internal, external and roosting bars etc.. as agree a wee bit expensive!

Worth looking at Flytesofancy as they stock a wide range but feed bit on the high side for me ( with p&P) great service with the diatom though as great price and arrived next day!

Your girls look lovely.. I'm sure you will be spending lots on them over the next few weeks!
