garyhere
Did anyone see this report today about the treatment of turkeys at Bernard Matthews farm.. The mock shock that the company shows is pathetic when you consider the conditions that the company allows the turkeys to spend their short lives in. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/norfolk/4940366.stm Please remember this report before buying any products from this company. Linda
I never buy anything from this company anyway, thank goodness! I saw the news coverage of this, and it really was quite horrific. I am happy to eat meat from animals that have been raised with the respect they deserve and slaughtered humanely but I can't believe anyone could be so cruel to a poor defenceless animal. For anyone who didn't see it, and I'm afraid this is quite shocking, two turkey farm workers were playing a type of rounders with the turkeys. One threw a turkey up in the air and another worker hit it with a stick. They were shown to do this several times with different birds. It was very upsetting and made me very angry. I wonder what goes on in someone's brain (if they have one) to make them think this is an acceptable thing to do.

Guest
That's horrible - I did used to buy BM stuff for packed lunches, but will absolutely NEVER buy any again. It's made me feel quite ill.
The Dogmother
I read that in the paper yesterday and it put me right off my lunch. The RSPCA gave their standard reply of saying that they would look at the videos before making a judgement. I haven't seen the footage myself (don't want to), but it sounds like they are obviously at fault here.

Not gonna cause ructions on here, but the RSPCA are not spotless in their care of animals, they do a very difficult job, under difficult conditions, but their farms leave a lot to be desired. Isnt the head of the RSPCA the animal loving Queen ?? (sic) (wouldnt be like her to go hunting, shooting or the horse racing would it ?? )
Martin B
I used to eat that stuff! Yuk.
Mel (& Paul)
I think one of the difficulties is price - so many people dont realise that one of the reasons products are so cheap is that animal welfare is at the bottom (or off) the list. Those on a budget find it very difficult to justify paying (say £3) for a pack of ham that is free range / organic when they can buy something like BM for 99p for a huge pack. I'm not excusing BM at all - they are out to make money. but we can only stop this sort of thing by publicity and by spreading the word. I shall CERTAINLY do that
The Dogmother
Too right mel! I buy freerange/organic where I can afford, but unfortunately I can't always manage it. I think that we all factor it into our lives as we can manage.

The Dogmother
I like that Mel, I will try to remember it. We are greener and more fairtrade than we ever were, but it's a bit at a time....

garyhere
I have just been to the BM site and registered my compalint. This is the link if anyone would like to do the same. Even if you don't buy their products, just telling them that you do and saying that you will stop buying them will help to get the message across. http://www.bernardmatthews.com/BernardMatthewsContact.asp
Tamsin
People that treat animals like that should rot in .... It makes me soooo angry to read things like that
Hellcat
That is disgusting. I have registered my complaint. I don't buy their products anyway, because I've heard about the conditions there before.

Happymama
Do not look into the treatment of chickens by KFC then !! (Kentucky Fried Cruelty) Boycott these products !!! I agree - I've seen the PETA video of how they treat their hens. I've not eaten a KFC since! Apart from the fact that the stuff is absolutely laden with fat. Louise
I just don't understand why anyone would want to be so cruel to another living creature Okay they are being reared for meat that doesn't mean the short time they have negates their need for respect and decent treatment

Louise
How does drop kicking a turkey and bruising the flesh increase its value I do know what you mean I just hate that sort of inane cruelty which appears to be just for fun These places should be forced to have a welfare champion who is legally responsible if standards slip and have the threat of a proison sentence. They should also be subjected to a regulated inspection team not just the RSPCA who have enough to do already - the meat gets more attention once the animal is dead not while it is still alive
