Brilliant. He must be intelligent enough if he learnt where to put the ball so presumably hes intelligent enough to know not to put it back if he wants to stop playing

I wouldn't say it was cruel, he does seem to be enjoying himself.

 

Molly makes her own entertainment here at home. Her favourite game is "Push it down the stairs". She grabs a ball (her orange bouncy ball is a favourite closely followed by a tennis ball ) runs to the top of the stairs, and gives it a nudge from the top step, waits for it to bounce to the bottom of the stairs, charge down and get it, then back to the top for another go.

 

She'll play that game for about 20mins most days

I could have doen with one of those machien when I had Jezebel - she was obsessed with having sticks thrown for her. If you tried to ignore her, she'd whack you round the legs with the stick

That was brilliant! Clever dog! Dennis has found out that if he jumps onto the settee with his ball and nudges it off, it goes further, then he leaps off and chases it. Looks like they spot an opportunity and grab it!

I wish my dog was that clever . He brings a chewy toy for you to throw but won't let go of it first so you have to wrestle it off him .

I don't think it is cruel - not if you read the inventor's explanation, as follows:

 

I built the ball machine because I thought my dog Jerry, might like it and that it would be something fun for me to build. So after two years of on and off work, with many safety features such as IR proximity sensors to protect Jerry and my son from the machine, I finally complete.

 

Far from being a replacement for me, I was always right there with him enjoying his fun. And with all the troubles that I went through to build the ball machine, I still end up throwing more balls than that the machine could count! According to the computer, he played with the machine by himself only 3 times in his life.

 

I recently put this video on YouTube to keep alive my earlier memories of him and (hopefully) provide some "humorous distractions" for anyone that might drop by.
