Cinnamon
Quote in the Daily Mail today from actress Lisa B (she was the naked brunette in the bathroom in Bridgit Jones, apparantly ) She lives in Bucks & has had to have her 4 hens put to sleep due to "Bird Flu Recommendation" Bit strange - I didn't realise there were any such recommendations about,& I live close to her in Oxon. Have the Mail got it wrong, for a change *sniggers*

Popcorn
When you have done that - take your daily mail, pull out said article, and go and line the chickens poop tray with it! Awful biased newspaper
Cinnamon
I have sent my very strongly worded email. To be fair it is a quote from Lisa B that the paper has printed,so maybe she is the mis-informed one? I feel a letter to her coming on......... Either way they should print something to confirm that it is pants, shouldn't they

buffie
This is Richard Kay and it's on page 41 of his column; Quote: Out of Chicks No such pregnancy qualms for Lisa B, however. 'I've just found out we're having another boy!' trills the five months pregnant actress, who already has an 11 month old son, Orlando, with her roperty tycoo husband Anton Bilton. Lisa's motherly clucking will hopefully overshadow the recent loss of chickens from Tyringham Hall, their Buckinghamshire mansion. 'We only had four, but we had to put them down becasue of the bird flu recommendations,' says Lisa. I really miss the eggs.' I'm livid don''t know about you. I am going to quote this in my email and ask them to post an apology. if she has put them down it's due to HER decision making not any recommendations. I think this hall is near me, need to check! Cinnamon
I have the address - not sure of the protocol of posting it here, but if anyone wants it pm me & I will pm it back to you I am drafting a letter to her now Quote from her biog on IMDB "Lisa is an active Animal and Human Rights Supporter, campaigning for charities including the International Fund for Animal Welfare (for which she is the UK spokeswoman) and UNICEF." So how is she so ill informed about bird flu then? Edited May 11, 2006 by Guest
Guest
Just wondering - don't high profile actors and actresses have special insurances for ridiculous sums to cover body parts / illnesses etc? If I am right, then her insurance company might have made it a condition of her insurance..... ? Unlikely, but possible..... ?
buffie
Well I've emailed them it wouldn't sound too good to say... I had my chickens put down because my insurance company told me to. It sounds as if she has done it because she's pregnant, WHY!!,what's next the cat. She should have just kept quiet, not put it in the newspaper. With any luck it's a miss quote and she'll be livid too BBx

236 OCU
Unfortunately the majority of the general public have been totally misinformed concerning Avian Influenza. The 'gutter' press, and to a certain extent television, have headlined and over-dramatised the situation. Neither have had the decency to tell the truth in the same manner as the scaremongering they put out - take for example the account of the Scottish Swan - Major Headlines! The end of the World as we know it! A major pandemic imminent! Then when the truth emerges very little is mentioned on the National News programmes and the only mention I saw in the press was hidden on about page 10. If you want the real facts then as well as the Defra website I can recommend www.wwt.org.uk whiich is the website of the Wilfowl and Wetlands Trust - they DO know what they are talking about! buffie
Thanks for that. I haven't had any response from my email but I expect they have to pass it around until someone decides it's their responsibility! BBx

buffie
Reply just received: Thank you for your email. The Mail has tried hard to cover the whole of the Bird Flu story in as much detail as possible and have certainly not tried to suggest that defra want a cull of small flocks of chickens. However, Lisa B told her reporter that she had been given such advice, as we reported in a light hearted Diary piece. She has since been re - contacted and stands by the comments she made. As patron of an Animal Welfare Charity she says she did not take her decision lightly. She may well have been misinformed or over reacted but she has done what we said. Nevertheless, the point you have raised is noted. Yours sincerely Charles A. Garside Assistant Editor Speechless.... BBx

Chicken on a mission
What can then say though? If they are just reporting what a misinformed...has said, should they have to contradict her at the end of the piece in the name of what's right? Cinnamon
I have responded to the email with this - "Thank you for sending me this circular response email. As The Daily Mail is so keen to print only the true facts about avian Flu,then I think a contradiction to the comments printed should be in order. While I realise that the paper is merely printing a quote,I think it should be made clear to other owners of small flocks of hens that it is NOT a DEFRA or Government guideline or recommendationto have the hens destroyed, just the response of one person. Regards Sarah A*****" Wonder if they will reply?
buffie
She had them put down for no reason and they think it's a light hearted issue , that's my problem and as Sarah says it could provide mis information to someone else. Serious subject matter not for a gossip column is my feeling. BBx
236 OCU
Well done Cinnamon It will be interesting to see if they do respond - but I wouldn't hold your breath
Cinnamon
What makes me REALLY MAD is that she could have had them re homed. And you would think that an animal welfare campaigner could have done this fairly easily,as well as being better informed in the first place The paper really ought to get her in for an interview to state why she made this decision & they can then print the real facts about BF in a calm & consice manner.
