Does anybody have experience of Araucanas?? We've got a Gingernut Ranger & Mrs Peppercorn coming from Omlet with our Eglu in 3 weeks time but after some very good advice on here, have decided to get a third hen to introduce to the Eglu at the same time as the other two.

I really like the idea of blue eggs and have found somewhere near us that has Lavender Araucanas which look beautiful. But I'm not sure what they are like (are they docile/child friendly/ok for beginners?) and how they would mix with the other two. Can you mix hybrids and pure breeds or is it best not to? If not then I'll stick to my original plan of an Amber Star I think and just forego the nice blue eggs!! The other option is a Columbine but I can't find any - argghh!!

Thanks for any advice you can give a beginner. :)

I haven't got an Aruacana, there are quite a few folks on here who have - but on the same day I had my cube delieverd with a Pepperpot and Gingernut, I picked up 4 Brahmas and a Cream Legbar. :D

All get on fine - well a bit of feather plucking here and there

But generally harmonious :D

Thanks both, much appreciated.

Helen, you did exactly what I'm planning on doing - would aim to pick up the third chicken on the same day as the other two arrive so they all get introduced to the Eglu together. Did you have to do anything special with them or did you just put them all in the cube together on the first day??

Also, had to say I love your avatar - I'm a big fan of springers and we're getting a Welshie pup after Xmas! Love the English too though.

we have a araucana and she's great, but smaller than most, but very stroppy and vocal. We lost our columbine, and have now got a cream legbar, they are both on the small side and very popular at the moment so watch out you are not sold a chook that is too young... I have found that you need to try and introduce them at the same size otherwise pecking can be a big issue.

The chooks were all quite nervous the first day - new surroundings, dogs barking etc. that they all huddled up together straight away. :D

There was very little pecking - the Cream Legbar got picked on a bit, but she was so young compared to the others, a couple of the others though used to rush over and protect her. :D

I have a red/black aruacana who is bonkers  I introduced her with a lavender araucana who we lost :( but was equaly as dippy and very friendly :D and also a cochin, and the 3 girls used to go everywhere together :D

Daisy is very vocal, and now makes her now far superior position in the flock known to the 4 new girls

She lays rather small green eggs :D

I had a lovely gold duck wing araucana, she was introduced to my original 2 omlet hens on the day they arrived, with another pure breed, a campine. To be honest the omlet hens were very bolshy towards the other two, but it very soon settled down (that was when I used bamboo canes poked through the holes of the eglu run to create a temporary seperator). The araucana was very scatty at first, but very friendly once she came into lay (a lot later than the others!) She laid lovely turquoise eggs, about 55g average, but not very often I'm afraid :?

I have a lovely hybrid who is half white sussex and half araucana - she is white, taller but more slender than my other chickens who are a mix of hybirds, pure breds and bantams, with huge blue feet and is completely dotty - she reminds us of Big Bird from Sesame Street. She has a lovely nature, inquisitive, silly, friendly, and very motherly towards the bantams (despite being the same age as them) - when we first got them, the bantams could not get up the ladder into the cube and she refused to go to bed whilst they were in this predicament, sitting on them below the cube to warn them and shouting "help! help!" at the top of her voice to alert us!!!!

Have just noticed I typed "white sussex cross", instead of "light sussex cross"!!! She is pure white though, hence the slip. I should also say her name is Myrtle. I keep meaning to post photos, will wait until holidays until I can get time to get head round the technology.
