The Dogmother
Mel - I've got a blueberry bush that my folks gave me at Christmas - it looks a tad weedy and no flowers at all yet - should it flower in the first year? I've given up covering up my taters and I'm waiting for them to flower now.....

Mrs Frugal
We've just dug enough new potatoes for the week from the allotment and they look lovely! Can't wait to eat them! We went down to do a spot of weeding and dug one root to see what it was doing and the potatoes were a wonderful size already!! Roll on tea time!! THe veggie patch is going great guns at the mo and the cauliflowers are HUGE! well their leaves are anyway!! Mrs Frugal
Mine are starting to flower now Andrew. They are Accent - first earlies - and are a good size now. If in doubt, dig up one plant and have a peek . First earlies take 12 weeks from planting. Maincrops take 24 weeks from planting.
The Dogmother
I'm a novice veggie gardener too Andrew, I think that taters can be harvested once they have flowered and the tops have died down. The plants themselves ae massive and look very healthy, so I hope that they are an indication of masses of taters I've got a couple of caulis and some broccoli from Phil's dad - they are growing well, but are a bit thin looking - I hope that they will bulk out. I read an article at the weekend about eating veg and herbs when they are still seedlings and at the 'first proper leaf stage', apparently it's all the rage now, and the taste and vitamin content are supposed to be good. Excpet with Rocket, which gets hotter as it matures.
Mrs Frugal
Mine have only just started flowering Clare and the tops are nowhere near ready to die down and yet the new potatoes underneath are perfectly sized now as you can see. These are first earlies. The second earlies are in flower but I'm not digging any of them yet and the maincrops won't be ready until the end of September/early October if last year is anything to go by. The Dogmother
They look gorgeous Kate I'm not sure what mone are - we had some Desiree sprouting at the back of the veggie rack, so I planted them and the plants are massive - I might have to split one of the sacks at the weekend and see what they are up to then. I can't wait for our own fresh taters.
Mrs Frugal
I've got Desiree too Clare. They are maincrops so might not be ready for a while yet though. The plants are enormous and vigorous so hopefully there's more going on underground than above!!
The Dogmother
So am I right in understanding that I need to let the plants die off first? The FIL has just given me a tomato plant too, so let's hope that the chookles don't murder it!
Mrs Frugal
If they are maincrops, yes. Wait for the foliage to begin to die back. If they are first or second earlies you don't have to wait for the foliage to die back as they should be ready from mid-June onwards. The Dogmother
Aren't you lucky? I am going to have a go and empty out one of my sacks this weekend. I have three sacks of desiree, the plants are enormous and there are still a few flowers, but no signs of the plants dying down.I can't wait to see what's in there, I just hope that I'm not doing it too early

Cinnamon
I have never grown potatoes,so have a few questions if all you expert spud growers out there don't mind We have a newly dug veggie plot, which we have been told would be good for spuds so...... What do we plant,& when????? Am I too late to plant some now,I find the whole lates, earlys & mains thing so confusing I don't want to do too many, just a few plants, but would love to grown some of the ones I regularly use in the kitchen (Desiree & Charlotte) Thanks
