Free Range - Or Are They...

Recommended Posts

This makes me so furious!!!

I just don't understand the attitude of these sick people, how can they treat poor animals like that?!!

Those poor chickens looked no better than my darling ex-batts when they were rescued and it makes me sick that they can actually get away with calling themselves free range.

it makes me so mad, but so sad for the poor little birds inside that terrible place!!

Good reply Poet. They are deceiving the public with that statement of strict welfare standards. Quite low standards then?

I agree - they turned a blind eye for an awful long time until it was filmed. Why did it take them so long to do that, and how many more places are like that farm that haven't been caught out on camera. Is the person who continued to pass the farm as OK been fired? Who was that person - another farmer using the same sort of practices? Hmmmmm. Not right, just not right at all.

We are lucky here, surrounded by local farms and organic ones too - we do have to travel a bit in some cases, but I like to know where my food comes from and how it is looked after. Other than that, I trust Waitrose - they have always been fairer to the farmer, hence a little expensive. We used to buy half a lamb from the local organic farm - as long as there is space in the freezer, it works quite well. I made mince out of the breast because I don't like too much fat, and made Cornish Pasties out of it.

Ooh sorry, must stop the rant - apologies folks.

The problem is if they ban factory farming in the UK people who continue to shop only by the price will buy imported meat instead and if you think factory farming in the UK is bad don't even consider the rest of the world

I am not trying to defend it just point out that in terms of cruelty free just banning it here won't stop the cruelty what needs to be done first is to lobby the government to stop allowing imports of products (which I would also include things like cosmetics etc) from countries that do not have the same basic welfare standards for animals as we do

THEN work on sorting out factory farming 8)

I know I am a voice alone here but I have seen alot of this stuff first hand and I know the only way to stop it is to work from the outside in

You're not alone Louise - I'm right behind you. If we can't support our contry's livelihood, then we're next to useless. I going back to the free range review site and getting a 'buy local' t shirt to spread the message.

CIWF, I'm with you on this one too.

Hear, hear to that.

I just wrote a wonderful rant, but decided to delete before posting - made me feel better though!

This is what I would like:

Food that is not covered in toxic chemicals.

Food that is not genetically modified.

Food that has been produced while being considerate to wildlife.

Food from animals that have been cared for properly and killed humanely.

Sea food that has been caught by traditional methods and not the way they trawl the depths with small holed nets.

Natural clothing that lasts and not man-made fibre (and not from animals that are bred for just that purpose such as mink).

Am I asking too much?:oops::oops:

Well as I am an omnivore, I am not going to change because I like eating a variety of food, but I appreciate other peoples values and tastes - my daughter is a vegetarian and I respect her choice. I would like people not to dump rubbish in the sea and sewage, so that would make it a better environment for such marine life. Also some fish farms should be taken to task because of the harm they have done. Of course if you don't want to eat marine life, then of course avoid it, but you shouldn't criticise other people because they do. After all, molluscs have been eaten for thousands of years and will continue to be as long as humans don't mess up the planet any more than they have done already.
