Geoid
A investigation has discovered chickens being kept in terrible conditions on a Norfolk poultry farm. Channel 5 went undercover to expose the appalling conditions in one farm which produces free range eggs. More Here
Tessa the Duchess
That is very depressing Another reason to keep your own chickens, so you know EXACTLY where your eggs are coming from. Tessa
Tiggy
at least they have been exposed, freedom foods my ****
superjules
Oh goodness, that's shocking. Why did they get issued the certificate if they didn't meet the standards? It makes a mockery of the whole system.
Gamebird
All very depressing. It's all talk, targets and ticking boxes to get a piece of paper to con the public into thinking they are buying a better product. I expect the RSPCA lady had to be careful what she said in these days of litigation. When will common sense come back?
Lapinou
Oh goodness, that's shocking. Why did they get issued the certificate if they didn't meet the standards? It makes a mockery of the whole system. I am dubious of so many of these awards a company can be given - like Fair Trade was made a mockery of for me when Nestle managed to win a fair trade mark for one of it's brands...one of the least ethical companies in the world! Seagazer
Oh god that is just awful, who or what can you trust? We can't all keep enough animals to feed ourselves. What do we do? If they have been certified by the RSPC, god knows what condition some of the non-certified ones are alike. I am truly disgusted.
Paola
I am speechless Words fail me, esp as it is a family forum
chelsea
that's really bad, worse than some of the broiler houses I have seen
LisaP
I was preparing dinner and not really paying attention to the news until that report came on. Had to hold back tears whilst watching it and now I feel . What's the point of these schemes if they are not implemented properly Those poor chickens Thank goodness we at least know where our eggs come from Lisa P
Egluntyne
Good grief. What a travesty the Freedom Food scheme is. I can see no reason why this particular farmer shouldn't be banned from keeping animals.
chelsea
I can see no reason why this particular farmer shouldn't be banned from keeping animals. agree, slap a ban on them and a hefty fine. Or better still - make them live in the same conditions for a month
Stevie
Hopefully more people will have seen this and make the descion to keep their own hens. Typical RSPCA though-they are the ones to blame here for not inspecting them correctly. Not intrested unless they're either fleecing the public for more money or Rolf Harris is around with a film crew. Never could or ever will stomach them.
Fleur
that's dreadful! my mother's friends have a chicken farm with 'barn' chickens and they're kept far far better than these poor little beggars!
chickenlass
Dear God! I saw this...it's just disgusting
freddie
Please bear this in mind when you're looking for hens to take in . as these "!free range hens" dont get any rescue package at the end of their term.... I have to say, around where I live most of the free range are just that; but I still take in ex free range, as well as ex batts
missuscluck
The problem with this is that it gives some people reason to say whats the point in buying free range eggs or meat because you cant be sure it is. My mum says that all the time and I always say of course it is, they cant say its free range if its not. In this case I am proved wrong. Very sad. Sunshine
My dad says that they could just lie on packaging and in this case he is right. It makes you wonder how many "free range" chickens are kept like this or if any other animals are kept in pooper conditions than the packet tells us. Tigerlily
Absolutely despicable And I look out at my beautiful healthy girls... and it breaks my heart that someone could treat chooks this way, with so little regard for their welfare BW x

The Dogmother
I've just watched that with tears in my eyes... and I'm used to going into battery sheds on rescues. That wilful sort of neglect makes me sick.

Rhapsody
Well I hope that farmer is proud of what he has done for the image of British Free Range Farmers!
Willow
Humm I suspect this winter when the number of eggs laid goes down we'll just be doing without (or getting more hens ). I was not impressed by the RSPCA. I wonder how much the farmers pay them for the certificates...
cammy73
What I don't get is why the RSPCA issued the certificate when they knew the conditions were that bad? Surely they should have with held the certificate and this would have encouraged the farm to get them selves sorted out..then they could apply again....and fined them HUGE amounts of money too!!! Those poor hens Sharon x
