First free ranging today...UPDATED WITH PHOTOS

Recommended Posts

Just off to fence off the vulnerable parts of the garden, then they're out for a couple of hours. Children are desperately excited. I'm apprehensive that we'll be able to get them back in again - will crack open a tin of sweet corn for bribes I expect

Can't believe we've had them five days already!

Hi Lapinou

You will be able to get them back in with a treat.

Have you got a special bowl that they will associate with a treat?

When they see this bowl in the future even if its got nothing in it they will be putty in your hands.

They will love being out :D

Have a good day!

We haven't got a treats bowl yet - we need to get one sorted as I've read about those before. They are *loving* it. The fencing looks nice and neat, so I'm really pleased with that - and we've worked out an easy way to make a 'gate' at one end so we can get to the bits we don't want the chooks getting to.

Here they are just making their way out:

Millie's the only one who'll let us stroke her so easily - we think she's close to laying as she's doing that flattening thing everyone talks about:

Getting used to the children:

And just wanted to post these two photos - this is what I did all on my own yesterday, with some 'help' from the children (it's the gravel boards and woodchip). The chickens love the woodchip, especially when we put a few currants in for them to scratch for and 'discover' :

And here is DH cleaning it out for the first time - so, so easy! The children all got chairs to watch him from  Just wanted to post it cos it looks so funny - DD2 looks like she's saying 'you missed a bit!'.

How lovely.

The hen with the light coloured hackle feathers is ever so pretty.

Scrumptious children. :D

She's Princess Aurora - named after the Disney Sleeping beauty - blond hair, you see

And yes, I think my children are rather scrumptious too! DD1's spent the day trying to tame Princess Aurora and is really making progress :)

Your chooks look real tame for their first freerange session and are activly staying close to your children! :D

We've made sure we've held each one at least once a day and got the children up close to stroke them each time - we are so keen that both the children and the chickens are comfortable with eachother - seems to be paying off :)
