AJuff
My first three hybids cost me £10 each, the next two £8 but they were 12wks not POL. The next two cost £20 each as they were blue/green egg layers. I have found some welsummers for sale but they are £23! Is that a fair price or have lived in the North too long???????? Egluntyne
It is the Hugh and Jamie effect I'm afraid, added to normal cost of living rises.
Hen Watch
It is the Hugh and Jamie effect I'm afraid, added to normal cost of living rises. I think so too. My hybrid Amber Star was £9 last April 07 from a Meadowsweet agent. Same agent selling them now for £14 each. That's a 55% price increase in 12 months......... superjules
At our local poultry centre, I think normal hybrids are £12, skylines are £15 (when they've got them!) and pure breeds are £25. They are all vaccinated though and they are very helpful so I don't mind paying their prices if it means I've got somewhere to turn to. I took Marigold there when I knew she was dying and they euthanised her for me. I gave the guy who did it a jar of chutney a few weeks later by way of thanks as they wouldn't take any money. Everybody is talking about rising feed costs and these have to be taken into consideration when you are raising a bird to sell. Small breeders used to charge £1 per week of the bird's age, but prices are creeping up and some breeders, as Egluntine says, are cashing in on the current trend and charging whatever they can get away with. Snowy
The welsummers are a pure breed, so more likely to be around the £20 mark. I think £23 is quite reasonable for a pure breed welsummer!
AJuff
If welsummers are a pure breed does that mean they only lay in the summer and go broody often?
Nuggywoo
I paid £10.00 each for 3 x 8wk olds then £14 each for 2 x 12 wk olds. The breeder I bought them from is based in Devon and I would highly recommend her to anyone and everyone! She breeds rare breeds (sheep & pigs too) and has just about anything you could ask for - a whole variety of different coloured egg layers. Her chickens are beautifully looked after and she is into conserving the rare and dwindling breeds (and wildlife). StephanieSB
Yep, the Jamie and Hugh effect. Actually, you'd think more people getting into chicken keeping would mean more of a market, prices going down. Maybe that will happen over time, but for now the market is taking advantage of huge rise in interest. One breeder near me is charging about £40 per bird, though some of his Meadowsweet-like hybrids are £28. When I first looked into getting an Eglu last year, Omlet was charging £10 or £12 per bird, and now I believe they are £14 or £16 each. It's a big hike for just one year... but it is happening almost everywhere. I'm hoping to get my own on Saturday, and have been told that £16-18 per Meadowsweet hybrid. AJuff
My Meadowsweet hybrids are costing me £10.50 each, that's for four. I couldn't pay £70 for four Welsummers . . .
dogs and chickens
My Omlet girls were £10 each and have just checked the web site and they are still £10. My White Stars (Meadowsweet - Bledlow Ridge, high Wycombe) were £12.50 each (In March, no idea if still at that price) and my pure breeds were £25 each. I do think pure breeds are stupidly expensive. My pure breeds are lovely and I love all my girls but next time round, I will only go for hybrids as price is a huge factor for us ! StephanieSB
My Omlet girls were £10 each and have just checked the web site and they are still £10. Hmm...? well, when I ordered my cube (due tomorrow by the way!!) the chickens were listed in my shopping cart as £14 each (I eventually cancelled them off the order, so I could get my own from a breeder). And my new brochure, right here, has a new price sticker over the old -- £14. Maybe the website info is not updated??
Yolky
My booklet said £14 on a sticker too but I was charged £10 for each when I ordered the eglu just over a week ago.
Gamebird
In East Sussex back in March this year I paid £12 each for my hybird Light Sussex, Bluebelles and Ginger Rangers. I have no idea how much they cost now.

However last night I went in Omlet shop and added a eglu and a pepperpot to my order and the pepperpot was £10 Does that mean the price at check out would change to £14 I don't understand ! beach chick
my 3 silkies and 1 light sussex were £8 each aged 8 weeks, at end of May. my leghorn and maran were £15 each, allegedly POL, early June. roughly this time last year, I paid £12 each for 2 sussex and 2 bluebells from the same man I got the leghorn and maran from. but as everyone says, everything is going up - feed in particular, so I guess the prices get passed on along the line. surferdog
£17.50 each for the Bluebelle and Silver and £15.00 for our little red hen. That was in Hampshire in March and there was a shortage which meant we couldn't have our original choices. I assume that's what's driving the high prices.
