Lethargic chook - it's all over

Recommended Posts

I'm so sorry to hear that Ziggy. Big hugs to you and the girls.

I am sure that you did nothing wrong, chickens sometimes just plonk out for no real reason. Please don't worry... mourn, bury her and go on holiday and enjoy yourselves.

Do you want to bring them over to me for their holidays while you're away? I could just about fit in a cube and another eglu!

Poor you. Sometimes they have a reaction to the antibiotics. Just like with humans they can have anaphylactic shock.

You did everything you could for her. No-one could expect you to do any better than that. Sending big hugs.

Sorry to hear the news. It'll be nothing you've done.

They are so good at hiding the fact they are ill, that often when you realise, they are too poorly to be helped.

They do have a light grip on life at the best of times.

Love to you and your daughter.

Thanks everybody... DD2 has recovered though still says the garden will not be the same without Nicky... there is something to be said in favour of having lots of pets all over the place, at least when she was upset I could say 'pick up your cat and go snuggle with her in the sofa'... to which the lovely pussy cat nicely obliged, snuggling up with Suki, which cheered her up...

Nicky was a lovely chook, always coming to stand in our feet, coming into the house to see what was going on... she will be missed... of course we held her funeral... though we are going to have to re-think burrying every lost pet or our garden will turn into a graveyard!!! I do like the kids being given the opportunity to bury them though , they seem to feel it's the right thing to do... does anyone know if it's possible to get a pet cremated but get the ashes back to spread/bury somewhere in the garden? It'd be more space saving, and easier as no danger of a fox digging them out...

Sorry for the gruesome subject... it's just with all these chooks and some rats and five cats, and the past rabbit and four guineas and 3 cockatiels already burried there, I'm starting to get a bit concerned with the whole burrying thing, yet don't like just leaving a lost pet at the vet's.

So sorry to hear about Nicky.

At my vets you can pay to have your pets cremated. We had this done for our dog Sally and cat Molly. I paid extra to have their ashes back. They came in a lovely box with their name on and a little dried flower. Their ashes were actually in a plastic bit inside the small box.

We then buried the boxes in the garden when we were ready.

Hi Ziggy

I've only just caught up with this thread. I'm so sorry that you've had a horrible couple of weeks with such a sad end . I can only echo what everyone else said, she had 2 wonderful months of freedom with you that she wouldn't have known if you hadn't given her that chance. You've certainly nothing to feel bad about. Sadly, they all have to go at some stage - unfortunately some sooner than they should.

Love & Hugs

Yes it's possible to get the ashes back. You normally get a choice of having them back "for scattering" which means they are in a plastic bag in a cardboard box or for keeping which means they're in a wooden casket. I've had both done. It isn't cheap but it is worth it.
