Cinnamon
I got 3 new hens last friday & one of them, the Welsummer, seems very dozy. She is also a bit snottay around the beak & sneezy. I have wormed & loused them all & added Respite to their water. Now,she has perked up a bit & is eating & drinking well, but still spends a lot of her time dozing on one leg, tail down The lady I got her from has been fab & has offered to swap her for me,but the only other Welsummers she has are a fair bit younger & I worry about pitching it in with the other 2,one of which is a White Star, already in lay & very much the boss. Instinct tells me to swap the hen for a more perky one,but sense tells me to be cautious. Of course I could always get another while I am there, then add 2 to the pen..... Egluntyne
Tricky. I'd be worried about her infecting the others tbh. If she has been with them there is little point in separating her now though. Why not see how things go and review in a day or two.
Cinnamon
Yes,I think I will give it until the weekend. They have all been together for nearly a week now anyhow,so I guess if any infection will be spread,it will have been spread already I am more concerned about taking her out & pitching a much younger hen in,in her place. Maybe if I do have to do this, getting another hen aswell might make it a bit easier? edit - just been to visit her & she now sounds a bit rattly & wheezy,so I think I will swap her for another Welsummer, (plus 1 more to make intros easier.Never need an excuse to get another hen!) Cinnamon
Thanks ladies Just back from the breeders, with a new little Welsummer, still called Willow because I like the name. She is a fiesty young thing,& is already #2 in the pecking order She was sharing a pen with much bigger Rhode island reds,so knows how to handle herself. A very pretty greyish Columbine also found her way into my carrier - she is as yet unamed but we are thinking maybe Hazel/Acorn/Weed? She had escaped her pen & was running around trying to get back in,bless her,& she just stole my heart I shut Mrs Fiesty Knickers (Sweet pea the white star) in the eglu for an hour to let the new ones settle a bit & get used to Dandelion the other Columbine. We shall se what happens from here on...........................

Sweet pea,the White Star Weed the Columbine Willow the Welsummer The other Columbine who I got last week,Dandelion, has gone into hiding in the Eglu

SarahJo
Your little "columbines" look just like my Jasmine . Funny how young they all look - Mrs Snowy is such a fiesty old bird now, and the boys loved the "hairdo" on Jas today when I came home. Do they still "squeak" "weep" a little, the younger birds - Jas certainly was more "trill" in her voice than the older hens, who's voices had clearly broken . Sweet - really gorgeous chooks.
