Chickaboo
Does every body love their hens as much as me??? I've never told Daphne but Phoebe is my favourite She follows me everywhere, pops into the kitchen for a chat, after banging on the catflap to be let in Falls asleep in my arms. She's so tame she will come out onto the drive with me to put bins outs, help with shopping etc and is much more obdient than most dogs! If it wasn't for the poo problem I think she could be a house hen. She was ill recently and it made me relise how much I love my hen, and how much i would miss that little ginger face when she's gone Am I the only one? SLK69
Hi, I understand completely - I have one I call 'sooky chook' as she is always up for a cuddle, and almost trips me up as she follows me so closely. Will be a sad day when her cheeky wee face doesn't appear at the door. Susie
kimbo_frog
Its crazy isnt it!...how much affection they gain... My fav girl is Jaimee...she loves a cuddle and a stroke... My other half thinks its really wierd! lol... she will sit on my lap and lay her head on my arm to stroke...purring Aris is not so willing to sit still... and Stephanie will do anything to get away lol... Losing the new girls recently has made me really think about how Id feel if she was one of the lost ones... I really would be happy to have the girls in a basket in my bedroom at night...my other half wouldnt agree... I have always found that once you discover the character of any pet...you do become very attached...and once that happens its always difficult to part... Im going away on holiday friday and Im so worried about my girls... I will be phoning my mum to check that they are all ok everyday...then ask how she is lol!!.... chelsea
fully understand. LBC (life before chickens), we went away every weekend in our caravan LAC (life after chickens) havent been away for a year, cant bear to leave them as we would be worried they'd be bored! I love the fact your hen helps you put the bins out! how sweet Ella likes coming into our kitchen, she also has a poo problem which means they are all banned now. chickenlass
I was surprised how upset I was when I lost Tallulah and put it down to her being on of my "first born" if you know what I mean Now I have 7 in total and have to confess to being more fond of some of then than others I think Hero [my little oven ready ex batt] is possibly my favourite as I felt so sorry for her and spent a lot of time ensuring she wasn't getting bullied etc when they first arrived. I would be upset if anything happened to any of them but Hero is special for some reason so I know I love her a little more.
Robbo1962
....and quite right too! I look forward to coming home to my babies, everything has to wait until I have checked them even the welcome hug from the old man. I hear them complaintng in the morning to be let out and will brave rain or shine in my dressing gown to let them out in the morning. I am often caught red handed with fresh sweet corn in the trolley for them! I adore them, I have a chair in thier run where I share a glass of wine and a packet of raisens! I try not to have a favorite but my newest rescue, an ex batt found on the curry mile in Bradford, really very dodgey place to be! is a sweety and was part of a deal to get some free bayrill! so winners alround! My orpington cross Poland is a scream and pretty dim, but very pretty! I cry at the thought of losing any them, I blubbed my eyes when I found my old 9 year old light sussex passed away! dancing cloud
I had been told before I got my ex-batts (and read on this forum) that my life would never be the same again - and they were right The cats still get fed and cuddled first, but then six little hens get let out into their yard and sat with in the morning, and six little hens get let out to play in the garden as soon as I get home at night. They really do worm their way straight to your heart. I don't have favourites , so the favourite I don't have is Joy, who was my most pathetically oven-ready, the first into everything (usually mischief) and is the cheekiest of my cheeky chooks. How much can you love a hen? As much as you can

Chickaboo
At the weekend we had friends round with a 3yr old child - who went out in the garden with a bag of sweets (big mistake), Phoebe chased him round the garden for several minutes dispite cries of "make her go away!!", then stole a sweet from his hand and chased him down the steps, making him fall flat on his face I had a slient chickle to myself whilst prising a cola bottle sweet from Phoebe's beak Needless to say chickens are not going to be his favourite animal (he was alright btw, I'm not completely heartless!). I had just put a post up last week about how much I love Phoebe, she is such a cheeky character

Cate in NZ
I still miss my Phil and Zola, they were my favourites out of my flock and so tame (and so stupid in the case of Phil ).
Mutrix Farmers
Charlotte is definitely my favourite; friendly, gentle, sociable and the only one who will jump up for a cuddle (with no food enticement either) But I love them all (except Katie when she steals food from the beaks of the other two - she was threatened with a box in the shed yesterday and gave me her best Catherine Tate "bovvered" face in return )
3happyhens
Yes! I'm amazed at how fond I've become of our 3 - only had them 5 weeks but they're real characters. They appear at the kitchen door & obviously want to come in for a nose-around - shame they poo so much otherwise I'd definitely let them in Kate & hens arrived 15/7/08 Flo 7/8/08 Gertie 18/8/08 Nell x 3 (Jools, Malcolm & Martin) 1 tortoiseshell cat - Tillie 1 husband 2 daughters

Substitute husband and babies perhaps!?!

josephine77
I love my chickens so much - they are such funny, naughty, sweet little monsters. It's true about the poo problem though - if only they could be toilet trained, I'd defintely promote them to house chickens- obviously OH would not agree
mayflower
It gets embarrasing what I collect in my shopping trolley in the supermarket.....cabbages, sweetcorn..lettuces....grapes......then something for us!!! Guest
My daughter (17) is smitten by ours and if we've been out rushes out to the garden to check on her babies. She is deffo "mummy" to one of them - Chirp adores her and puts her head on her for a cuddle and holds onto her fingers!! I never thought she would be like this but already she says she couldn't imagine life without chickens and wants loads more! .....and a country house to go with them! likeastar--x
My dog and cat only come a close second to my chickens - they have tons of personality and make me laugh all the time. I took Tallulah into the living room and we both watched tv for ages and then she slept on my lap. Theyre such lovely, curious creatures. I cant believe I used to go to farms and just walk past them, I love mine to bits! You dont understand until youve had them yourself.
