Goodbye and my best wishes for the future

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have had a minor tiff with the moderators which has elicited, in my view, an unecessarily heavy handed, humourless and authoritarian responce.

I appreciate that this is the way the forum will be run; moderators are necessary and their views must be respected however I think that their actions should be reasonable and, in this case, I don't consider that they were. However you will make your own minds up about that.

I hope this message isn't moderated off (but I'm not holding my breath) because I want to wish everyone all the best and thank you for your company since 2004.

In case I don't have the technological skills to achieve it I'd be grateful if the moderators could remove my gallery and unsubscribe me - or whatever may be necessary - from the forum.

Regards

Richard

Hi

In view of the private messages I have recieved I realise that I've been a bit hasty in asking to be unsubscribed from the forum. I would miss the company and views of the people who contribute. I still feel that the moderation in this situation has been unecessarily harsh however I have decided that I will live with that in order to keep in contact with the nice people on the forum.

However I really would like the moderators to consider whether all their alterations are really necessary; and also not to take offence at critisism. Other people are entitled to views and, as regards my posting, context is just as important as what it said. If I used obscene language as a matter of course I would understand being moderated and expect to be thrown off the forum. When I cut and paste a phrase from a national BBC news website, I consider it to be over the top, especially when the substitution is ridiculous. I also think that one of the vital ingredients of a forum such as this is humour, both in the postings and in the moderation.

In my job quality assure a lot of stuff that other people produce - people who are far more competent than I am; I have learnt that you have to respect other people's views, the way they express themselves and the way they think.

Maybe there are learning points here for me and the moderators.

Ooooohhh, I'm glad you're staying. Moderators are necessary and I got modded, twice I think and they were right, but they're just people too and I guess they can get it wrong sometimes. With the best possible intentions though I think.

Anyway, I would miss your dry humour, daft postings and excellent boating holiday recommendations!

Thanks. I'm not going to go on about this anymore as I was under a basic misapprehension and so I apologise to the moderators. I have however been put right; I've been told in no uncertain terms that this forum belongs to James and the moderators and that the moderation won't change whatever - if I don't like it I can go and find another forum to join.

What a shame that the forum can't be regarded as belonging to the contributors and that progress isn't an option; I had assumed that was the situation and was arguing on that premis.

However I'll say no more and I'll live with the way it is - those are the rules and that's the way it is going to be.

I had a post deleted once, though I can't for the life of me remember what it was about. It may just have been that the whole thread I posted on was deleted.

Anyway. Glad you've decided to stay Richard.

I don't envy the Mods all their hard work, having done so on a board that had only a fraction of the posters that are here. Must be a nightmare just to keep up!

Hello Richard.

How do you know when you have been moderated? Half thetime I forget what I 've said anyway. I am glad you are staying. There is surely a place for all to have their say. I am very new to all of this however.

Hi not Richard here but I do have some experience in these matters  , mostly accidental (my words being taken out of context whilst a bit drunk or being typed out of context for the same reason) or a joke that whilst funny was in bad taste or when........anyway, I have apologised in private to those I have upset (where I thought there was reason to, usually to mods).

The standard procedure is to receive a PM highlighting the reasons why a mod decision has been made. If more than one person is involved then they are PM'd too.

After some humble pie eating (where appropriate) apologies are made then everything is back to normal.

There has also been the odd post that has gone missing for no reason, not modded just gone. :anxious:

Why anyone signs up to be a mod is beyond me, thankless task really. I would rather be a lollipop man on the M1,:lol:

Hope this helps,

I am glad you decided to stay Richard, the forum would not be quite the same without your excellently witty posts :D

Kev.

You can't have free speech and moderation, and I prefer free speech. But when the forum belongs to someone else, then you have to submit to the rules.

With a moderated forum, each and every message is the responsibility of the moderators rather than the posters, and so they are going to err on the side of caution.

I am glad you are staying.
