Selling your eggs

Recommended Posts

How much would you sell your eggs for?

A few people at work want to buy our eggs as we now have 5 chooks and get around 4 eggs per day (someone has a day off).

I am not sure where to start but they have all had a box of four eggs and are now fighting over the next box when I bring them in. I will add they have offerd me money and I have no idea what to say.

Any help appreciated.

I charge £1 for 6, but most people try to give me more  I find this is more than enough to cover food, bedding and treats for the girls plus some left over to send to BHWT each year.

Everyone's happy. The customers get great tasting eggs at an affordable price and they're not buying 'value' eggs from the supermarket.

If people offer you money, just say thank you. I found it hard at first but they think they're getting a bargain! :D

I charge £1 for 6 and sell them at the gate. Sometimes when there are none out there people come and knock - both our neighbors buy them as do people from the industrial units at the other end of our service road. They are snapped up the day they go out and our customers love them.

I wouldn't worry about the cost - they are cheaper than the supermarket and better quality.

Will be selling £1.50 for 6, or more likely £1.00 for 4. If people want to buy supermarket eggs instead of our eggs that's fine by me :)

Using this calculation, assuming the hens lay like robots at 6 times a week then we'll cover the cost of the run, and feed in just over 3 years.

Unfortunately I keep spending money on things so the payback period is getting longer.

That said we haven't sold any yet as we have been eating them all or giving away a box to friends/family.

6 x Waitrose Free Range Very Large Eggs are £2.19.

I ask £1.50 for 6 eggs. I have a queue of people at work wanting them and I have a waiting list. I've had comments that my eggs taste even better than free range organic shop eggs and that my eggs are bigger than the very large ones on sale. Also the yolks are bigger so you get more to dip with your "soldiers".

I gave away a few boxes of eggs to people at work in return for allotment produce and the promise of some pickled walnuts. I've just sent an email to all my colleagues to say I'll be selling eggs at 4 for £1.20 with all proceeds to BHWT. I have 4 boxes to sell and I've had one preorder. We'll see what happens tomorrow in the office. Wish me luck!

I've sold 10 boxes over the past 2 days. Boxes of six for £1, with an honesty box. It's amazing how quick they sold. I think people like the names of the hens on the eggs. Will put the table out again on Thursday...when the egg stash has built up again & I've made some more jam. We are going to sponsor a BHWT hen with the jam money, as the egg money pays for the chicken food & treats.

I took 3 boxes of eggs to the office yesterday. I got a lot of questions about when they were laid, how long they would keep and a pregnant lady asked me about the hens' vaccinations. I got 80p for 4 eggs although I will get another 40p later. My boss gave me £2 for 4 as it was a good cause. Two other boxes have gone but they haven't paid yet so I will chase them up today!

I've made a sign to put up in the office so hopefully that will remind people that I'm selling eggs and that it's for a good cause. Possibly £1.20 (20p refunded when box returned) for 4 eggs is too expensive but then I only want to sell them to people who really want them. I try to take care of my hens, in particular their diet, so that they produce the best eggs. If people want to buy mediocre eggs from the supermarket then it's up to them - I'm happy to give some spare eggs to my ferrets!

I sold mine initially for 50p per 6 and, after reading all the posts on the subject on this forum, have just put the price up to £1.00. The money will still all go to the BHWT and they'll now get a lot more :D

Funny thing was, after informing all my regulars of the price increase, I suddenly got inundated with boxes to fill and have a queue of 7 boxes - and I thought I might get fewer customers (and maybe some eggs for me). Nowt so queer as folks
